Hook up hard drive to directv without dvr?

My dad has direct tv but no dvr from them. He recently bought a second receiver that can record shows off a HDD. It has hdmi in and was thinking of hooking a external HDD and plug the receiver/recorder to the direct tv box and record that way. I told him pretty sure Direct TV has encryption to prevent third party devices from doing this. Is it possible to do this?

You can only attach external HDD's to DVR's which support external drives. Most DVR's have external ports (ie: USB, firewire, etc.), but most have the ports disabled. How the disc is formatted and the data stored is irrelevant.
