Peculiar computer problem...

Some time ago, I got the Command and Conquer: The First Decade DVD for my PC. It wasn't technically designed to run in Vista, but I more or less had it working fine. A year or so ago, however, the Yuri's Revenge game within it, which was the one that I really wanted, stopped working correctly. I can still technically play it fine, but it has no sound at all. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the whole pack several times (which takes a while), but to no avail (I can't find my parents' damn startup disc, or I'd just reformat the whole computer if they'd let me). What gives? Everything else within the game works.

Try manually updating or reinstalling the audio drivers. The drivers should be available from the computer manufacturers website.

Hate to resurrect an ancient thread, but before I do this, I have to make sure, will it mess anything up? I don't want to cripple the audio for anything else! It's a Gateway running Vista.

Re: Peculiar computer problem...

What I would do is download the proper (and most recent) audio driver for your computer directly from Gateway, have it ready on your desktop, then either go to Programs and Features in Control Panel, locate the audio driver and uninstall it from there, or (if it's not available in Programs and Features) go to Device Manager, right-click on the audio driver and uninstall it from there, reboot if necessary, cancel out of any attempts by Vista to reinstall the driver (if you can), then double-click on your audio driver file you saved on the desktop and follow through with installing it from scratch. You'll probably need to restart the computer once it's installed.

What the heck are you doing, using your parent's computer? How old are you that you don't have your own?

I'm old enough that I should be out of the house by now, but I'm being a delayed adolescent. Or something. I've just never bought one of my own, I'm lazy and cheap and use theirs .

Can you run the game in Windows XP mode? I don't know if this option was available in Vista.

Got a brand new computer with Windows 8. Installed, uninstalled, and reinstalled it. Again. Click YR, tells me an unknown .exe file wants to proceed, I say yes. Screen goes black to load for a minute, comes back to the menu. Regular RA2 plays, freezes sometimes. I'm seriously starting to think God doesn't want me to play this game.

First step to legacy software on Vista/7/8 - did you right click on the EXE, select properties, and change it to Windows XP compatibility mode? Also try "run as administrator".

I look forward to an update next year when you're on Windows 9.

Well, I can get the regular game to play and YR to play in administrator mode, but unfortunately, can't get it to stop freezing in either mode. Also, I suck at this game.
