Need a laptop tomorrow around $1000 or so.

My dad has decided he is going to buy a new laptop for my mom. He was going to just go buy something at Sams and bring it home.

I told him at least wait to see if there is anything decent he can buy locally (Or Amazon since I have prime). So we have Best Buy, Office Depot, Staples to choose from.

She is not a gamer, but there would be some very mild flash games played (my kids and my niece). I would guess battery life would be premium. Something small but not too small, and I would guess she would like something with an optical drive...

Any ideas what the best going device in that price range?

If she's not doing anything crazy with it, why would she need a $1000 laptop? You could probably get something for $700 or so that would completely fit her needs.

A laptop for what?

A chromebook or tablet will do most everything she needs

Look for a deal in an ultrabook. If you don't want the latest/powerful, you can get a good enough ultrabook for around $600.

I know she doesn't need $1000 laptop, you know she doesn't need $1000 laptop. But my dad put that much aside and he says he wants the best he can get for that.

I like the idea of ultrabooks but finding one with an optical drive may prove difficult.

Re: Need a laptop tomorrow around $1000 or so.

I grabbed a 14" Acer M5 with a optical drive from Best Buy a few weeks ago for work. I like it enough, although its older and seems to have already been pulled from Best Buy's site.

Still, I think you can find a 14" laptop with optical drive that's still fairly slim in the $700-800 range, last generation Ivy Bridge Core i5, 4-8 GB of RAM.

Re: Need a laptop tomorrow around $1000 or so.

Alright so I also support cheaper brands when it comes to experienced computer users, I however do not support Acer and say MSI when it comes to less experienced users. As such I tend to stay away from most brands that aren't heavily based in the US.

IMHO, there is no better laptop on the market than the MacBook Pro Retina for non-gamers. However, it is a bit out of range for most users, the MacBook Air features phenomenal battery life as well but I'm not sure if it has Flash support.

Going off that set of standards, I would say the Dell XPS 14 and the HP Envy 14 Spectre. Unfortunately they lack DVD drives so there's that.

Re: Need a laptop tomorrow around $1000 or so.

Personally, I'd get the Lenovo in that case. Part of it is I prefer 14" to 15.6" and hate 1366x768 resolution.

Review wise, I can't find much on the P400, apparently it's the Best Buy version of the Z400 but I'm not certain on that.

I've had good luck with Lenovo support in the past as well so they've even as far as I'm concerned.

Kinda what I was thinking... I do like the SSD in the Dell, but I kinda feel like the Lenovo has a better name.

Re: Need a laptop tomorrow around $1000 or so.

I think they've even in terms of name, I've used great Lenovos and bad ones, great Dells and bad ones.

It's $779, tell your dad to buy a $150 256gb SSD and a $20 dvd-rom drive, reinstall windows, done. (I realize this isn't very realistic, but yeah )

I'd take a look at the Lenovo in store if possible to see how the screen quality is, the Z400 was knocked for having a weak screen but it's a different screen than the one on this one.

I could do it for him, but he wants to buy it, hand it to her and be done. He doesn't want me "tinkering". Although if she decides to keep it (she may decide he spent too much), she will have me clean it up for her.

I may go down there with him tomorrow after work to look at them both to decide which one "feels" right.

Re: Need a laptop tomorrow around $1000 or so.

Valid point.

Oh and that processor, the Intel i7-3632QM in the Lenovo, is absolutely crazy strong and over twice as powerful as the one in the Dell.

However, the one in the Dell is more than sufficient.

I think the most glaring difference a non-tech person would notice right away -- and every day -- is the resolution and screen size difference.

1366 x 768 + 15.6 inch on the first one might actually be good for, say, a senior citizen

1600 x 900 + 14 inch on the second one might not be

Acer is pretty good these days. Well, at least not terrible

That said, I like Lenovo. I probably would have bought a Lenovo if I didn't pick up the laptop I ended up getting.

I also agree with stevevt though about resolution for older folks; as much as its nice to get a higher resolution screen, since Windows scaling sucks it means smaller everything on a smaller screen at native resolution and scaling, which could be tougher for those with bad eyes. I don't think 1600x900 will be too bad though.

I like Acer, I just hear their support is shit and face it, their build quality generally leaves something to be desired.

I'm on an Acer right now

This.

I would hate a 15.6'' screen with that resolution, but it may be the best for a senior citizen.

That's true, never thought about getting support from them. Although the build quality of my laptop is pretty solid...

Since you didn't specify OS and said it's for your mom, I'd go with a Macbook.

We thought about it, but it is $200-300 more than the budget, and she would have to rebuy programs she already owns (Office, Photoshop, etc).

Are you satisfied with a Windows 8 machine? Personally I'd rather have Windows 7. Have you taken that into consideration? Do you want to saddle your mom with what I consider a piece of crap - namely Windows 8?

Windows 8 is a fine OS at it's core, the only issue is with the "Modern" UI they put on it, which can be eliminated with 3-party tools like the free Classic Shell:

As much as I don't like using a 3 rd party shell (I don't think they look professional enough) they do make Windows 8 function fine. Being able to use the screen as a touch screen is useful from time to time.
