How often do you upgrade your cell phone?

I was at Best Buy the other day getting the Galaxy Note II for $37, and the salesman was talking to me about extended warranty, and how no one keeps their phone after 1.5 years. Although I upgrade every 7-9 months the last few times, I think most upgrade closer to the 2 year mark.

Re: How often do you upgrade your cell phone?

Just got my iPhone 5 today. The phone that I had gotten prior to that wasn't even a smartphone and I had that one since 2008. Prior to that I had another non-smartphone that I had since 2004. In a nutshell I've had 3 phones in 8-9 years. This iPhone 5 is my first smart phone. I guess I had an aversion to paying $200 for a phone. I never paid for any of those other phones, because I was always out of contract and qualified for a free upgrade with contract renewal. The very first one I did get back in the day probably cost $49 in addition to signing a 2 year contract.

Probably around 12 months, i've gone from a Galaxy S, to a Galaxy Nexus and now Nexus 4. I feel like i'll be keeping my Nexus 4 for longer though.

I still use a flip phone that I bought around 2003-2004.

Depends how much money I have or feel like spending, used to 3GS for three and a half years and then went to the 4S.

I went from a 3GS to an iPhone 5. So it was almost 3 1/2 years for me too.

Re: How often do you upgrade your cell phone?

Well with the upgrade discount I was doing every 2 years. Now as long as they still grandfather in my unlimited data with Verizon if I pay full price I can do it whenever something exciting comes along.

You can open a new line of service, for example get the note 2 for $50,then cancel immediately and pay $350 etf for Verizon. You would pay $400 total, which is expensive, but cheaper than paying full retail price of $700

Whenever work gives me a new one (which is pretty much when the old one breaks or stops working).

Re: How often do you upgrade your cell phone?

Every 22 months, since my carrier lets me upgrade two months before my 2 year contract expires.

I can't wait to upgrade from my piece of shit Droid X2 and going back to the iPhone...have to wait until mid-May for my "deal" of an upgrade.

Wow, I never even thought of that. So you're cancelling the 2nd line and keeping the phone?

Re: How often do you upgrade your cell phone?

You can add a line of service, as soon as the phone is activated, call Verizon and tell them that you want to cancel the line, paying Etf. Be careful, some third party like amazon, dell, sams club have a secondary etf of $400. This is not applicable if you buy straight from Verizon or Costco or best buy, or perhaps some others.

Me, I am keeping the line since I pay under $15 after taxes for a dumb phone line, but some reported paying more, depends on your area. In 20 months i can upgrade again directly from Verizon,, but some third party require 22 months. Works for me because my parents use dumb phones.

Re: How often do you upgrade your cell phone?

The last two phones I've replaced after 10-12 months, both times buying out my contract for a reduced amount to get "the next best thing." I currently have the EVO 4G LTE and might keep it the full two years, as I don't see anything significantly better on the horizon just yet. But, I said the same thing about the EVO 3D, so who knows?

I don't do contracts so I upgrade whenever my phone dies or I need/want new capabilities -- usually about once a year.

Me too. Doesn't everyone do this? Wouldn't upgrading sooner involve a ridiculous non-subsidized price on the new hardware?

Re: How often do you upgrade your cell phone?

Depends, especially if Google keeps releasing affordable phones like the Nexus 4.

I'm on Verizon and will lose my unlimited data on my next upgrade apparently, so I may go unsubsidized for my next phone... who knows.

Android phones are generally around $550 - $600 unsubsidized, iPhones are what $650+?

Re: How often do you upgrade your cell phone?

I thought my $650+ unsubsidized price I paid for my iPhone 5 was going to be a tough pill to swallow but I figure I'll keep it a year plus keeping unlimited data. It wasn't that tough to justify it.

Re: How often do you upgrade your cell phone?

I have ATT and unlimited data is grandfathered for the foreseeable future. Glad I never switched when I had the chance.

$500-600 IS a tough pill to swallow! Especially since you get no real benefit in the way of cheaper rates. Just lack of a contract which who's not going to keep their carrier for 2 years? Its not as if there are real significant differences.

When you figure what you'd be paying for an equivilent amount of data if you go on the tiered data plan there is a savings.
