Question about SATA HDD docking station.

I recently purchased a 3 slot HDD docking station and was wondering if it would be safe to remove/add hard drives while the dock is powered on and hard drive(s) are are already in it. This is the one Im using in case it makes a diff. Thanks.

Re: Question about SATA HDD docking station.

The description for your dock says it's hot-swappable (aka swapping drives while it's still on). Still, you'll want to eject the individual drive in Windows before popping it out of the dock.

OK so I can add one but have to eject one while it is powered on?
I assumed hot swappable meant I can turn the dock on without rebooting my machine, not actually add drives while its on.

This line is confusing me. Your dock has 3 slots, so if you have, say, one drive in, you can add another to a different slot without turning it off or unmounting the other drive on the PC.

If, however, you're removing a drive from the dock, you have to unmount (aka "eject") it in Windows before removing it from the dock. You should do this whether hot-swapping or turning the whole dock off.

Not your dock, but here's a video showing hotswapping drives with a dock on:

Personally, I'd still turn the whole dock off before swapping drives, it seems safer to me.

Oh wow. I've NEVER unmounted a HDD before shutting the dock off and I've owned numerous docks before and did it that way for years. I'm not even sure how to unmount a HDD. Disk management?

Here's how to safely remove usb drives from your computer:

Of course, this article shows that doing the "eject" may not be necessary for all drives:
