Blu Ray burner recommendations?

I got some Christmas money and I have a ton of HD video files (from a video camera) that I want to put on disc. I see LG's are fairly well rated. I'm looking to spend less than $100. I don't necessarily need software as I have Sony Vegas to burn the video, but I wouldn't mind spending a little extra for data burning software.

I have LG and Asus, both are good. I think the Asus may be manufactured by LG.

I had a problem with the first Asus I got but the replacement was fine and the Asus was cheaper than the LG.

You might consider a portable unit. I have one of those and it's convenient to be able to move it around.

I have an LG as well and haven't had any problems with it.

I have a Pioneer that has worked flawlessly for me.

Software wise, I edit with Sony Vegas and create discs with Nero, but I exclusively use ImgBurn for burning the actual discs, DVD and Blu-ray both. It's very reliable, not bloated at all, and free.

I've got the Samsung SE-506AB. It's a portable external drive. Works really well and is very convenient.

Re: Blu Ray burner recommendations?

this is going into a desktop computer. i don't really need portability as anything that i don't have on there can be moved from my laptop via portable hd.

thanks for the recommendations.

Re: Blu Ray burner recommendations?

Well, after the mostly positive reviews of LG, I picked this up from Amazon: LG Electronics 14x Internal BDXL Blu-Ray Burner Rewriter WH14NS40. The bare drive was only $5 cheaper, so I figured the one that came with software was worth $5 more.

I see the price has fluctuated quite a bit over the past few months, but I want this now.

Any recs on media? I got a 20 pack of Optical Quantum that was fairly well reviewed. I know Verbatim has made quality discs in the past, but I've seen mixed reviews.

Unless you want to burn really fast or need dual-layer media, I don't see any reason to use anything other than Optical Quantum. I also use Verbatim LTH media at times since I only burn data, not movies to be used in players. Usually just what's cheaper between those two.

Re: Blu Ray burner recommendations?

I'm looking for dual purpose: home movies in blu-ray players and data. I read those LTH ones don't work for movies on many blu ray players, so I didn't get them. Glad to see those Optical Quantum ones are recommended. Thanks, X.

I got the same burner just 2 montbs ago and it has worked very well even in my 5 year old desktop. I went with the Verbatim 6x BD-R (not LTH) 25 packs from Amazon. They fluctuate in price crom $27 to $50. Grabbed a few spindles when it was $27

Re: Blu Ray burner recommendations?

Well, that didn't last long. This is the LG WH14NS40. It reads and writes blu rays fine, but no longer recognizes any DVDs. It used to. I tested a DVD-R first when I added the drive to my desktop and everything went well. Since then, I've used only blu rays in it. After doing this for a few months, it doesn't know how to read DVDs any more.

What a bummer.

Looks like you'll need to deal with warranty service. Not a big deal.

Re: Blu Ray burner recommendations?

Updated the firmware and can read and write dvd-r again. Cannot do dvd+r though, but never tested that initially so who knows

It certainly should be capable of that.
