Microsoft Surface Tablet

Anyone watching this? Looks pretty nice. 10" tablet running windows 8. The keyboard/case w/ trackpad is fucking ingenious.

Re: Microsoft Surface Tablet

It's got my interest. Now let's see those pricepoints and see if it's still appealing.

the pen being magnetic that sticks to it seems like a pretty smart idea, too.

Doesn't matter much until we see price and what kind of ecosystem this will have. I know Office is a big draw, but another app store?

Re: Microsoft Surface Tablet

32 and 64 GB sizes. "price competitive with other ARM tablets."

Interesting that they are going to come out with two different specs, fragmenting their market.

From the company that puts out a dozen different versions of the same OS? Not surprised.

So far no pricing, availability or screen resolution.

Here's a spec sheet: http://www.microsoft.com/global/surf...especsheet.pdf

Re: Microsoft Surface Tablet

They don't say. The lesser one has a "Cleartype HD display" and the Intel Windows 8 one has a "Cleartype Full HD display" but I don't see any more exact specs than that.

Assuming that this is going to have it's own set of applications and not just try to make everything on the desktop work on a tablet (which IMHO would be crazy); do developers already have the tools and just had to keep a lid on it? Or are we just really really far out from release, because otherwise where's the software going to come from? All 1st party?

Re: Microsoft Surface Tablet

The ARM tablet should start at $400 or less. The Intel tablet should start somewhere between $800 and $1000. That's based on what they said.

The tech looks amazing, let's see how it works in the real world. Microsoft has some big hits in hardware, and of course some fails, although some of those fails are more that they didn't know what to do, I.e. Zune.

I wonder about the intel tablet, at that price point, would you like an ultra book or a tablet? Considering they will have almost the same power. Yes, I know some features will work better in one device than the other and viceversa.

"Full HD" generally means 1920x1080.

I imagine the software will come from whatever they develop for Metro. I guess applications would be compatible with this thing and desktop PCs. At least I would hope so, because that seems to be the whole point of putting Metro in desktop versions of Windows 8.

And oh yeah, it looks like a 16:9 (10?) screen.

Here's a tweet I saw that sums this up pretty well:

Yawn. The case looks interesting. That's about it.

Well I assume in their eyes, targeting two different types of markets. Windows RT for regular tablet users with more tablet like specs down to the ARM CPU, versus full on Windows 8 with Intel tablets that look closer to fully being able to replace your laptop.

I think they look really, really interesting, especially the Ivy Bridge Windows 8 tablet with a type cover.

Re: Microsoft Surface Tablet

So it's like a tri-fold wallet? Looks OK. I think Dell had something like that (touch screen laptop that could fold into a tablet but it wasn't a big hit.

I'd still like them to make a win8 pc like the raspberry pi but with much faster specs.

Re: Microsoft Surface Tablet

I like the keyboard case, but other than that nothing feels "fresh". On a related note, I saw my first Microsoft Store today. Blatant ripoff of the Apple store, wow! But there were a lot of customers, so gotta hand it them for going with what works...

Curious, what would it take to feel fresh these days?

Running a full os and having ports is nice.
