Re: Microsoft Surface Tablet

No, the Surface Pro line works just like a normal laptop would, just basically in a different form factor.

Re: Microsoft Surface Tablet

How do you store stuff? The device I looked at has only 128 GB (SSD). I need more than that for music and pictures. Do you attach an external drive to a USB port?

Re: Microsoft Surface Tablet

If you're looking at the Surface Pro series, it basically a regular Windows laptop. I am still rocking my Surface Pro 2 and it runs everything my Windows desktop runs.

No, the Surface Pro 4 is a 100% compatible Windows 10 PC. Anything that can run on Windows 10, can run on a Surface Pro 4. It comes with Windows 10 Pro.

The "Surface RT" and Surface 2 (without the Pro) couldn't run standard Windows apps. But the Surface Pro line has always been able to run standard Windows apps. The Surface 3 also could run standard Windows apps.

You can get one with more internal storage, up to 1TB, but it costs more. There's also a microSD card slot, so you could use that for storage. Other than that though, yes, you could us a USB external drive.

Another option could be a "network drive" that sits on your network that the Surface Pro could connect to.

I use the microSD slot to add memory.

Re: Microsoft Surface Tablet

Thanks for all the replies. I was looking at a bundle package at Costco that includes, for $850:
- Intel i5 with Intel HD graphics 520
- 4 GB RAM
- 128 GB SSD
- Win 10 Pro
- Keyboard

I'll need to go back and look at it more carefully.

Re: Microsoft Surface Tablet

Best Buy has a Surface Pro 4 sans keyboard and pen for just $650:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/microsof...?skuId=5723346
- Intel Core m3
- 4 GB RAM
- 128 GB SSD
- Win 10 Pro

Black Keyboard Type Cover is on sale for $92:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/microsof...?skuId=4561924

Pen for $53:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/microsof...?skuId=4562018

So $795 total, but with a slower processor than the Costco Bundle.
https://www.costco.com/Microsoft-Sur...100317818.html

BTW, Best Buy also has the Samsung Galaxy TabPro S 2-in-1 on sale for $699:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/samsung-...?skuId=5507808
- Intel Core m3
- AMOLED Screen
- 8 GB RAM
- 256 GB SSD
- Win 10 Pro
- Keyboard

The reviews for it make it sound like an interesting Surface Pro competitor:

Re: Microsoft Surface Tablet

For my purposes (non-gaming) should I prioritize RAM and SSD over processor speed? One thing I'll have to check is how many ports these devices have.

I assume they can be connected to an external monitor when I'm at home?

Re: Microsoft Surface Tablet

I decided to go with a HP Spectre x360, which is a laptop which can fold like a tablet. It's more than I planned to spend, but by getting a pre-Memorial Day sale and special discount, I was able to stay just under $1000, with the following:
- i5, latest (7th) generation
- 512 GB SSD
- Touch screen and stylus included
- 13" screen

It will ship on 6/2.

The main draw for me was the number of ports (two USB Type C/Thunderbolt and one Type A), and the form factor (very thin and very light). Since I don't upgrade laptops as often as I used to, I wanted to spend a little more to future-proof myself. At least that's the excuse

Microsoft also announced a Surface Laptop. I am curious to see the design and specs of that new line.

The Surface Laptop was announced a few weeks ago:

What's the holdup? Can't they just load the same security software as for a regular Windows laptop?

Thanks. For $999, the specs are pretty underwhelming. You can get a higher-capability HP Spectre or Lenovo Yoga at that price. To be fair, I am comparing sale prices (15-20% off) of HP/Lenovo to regular prices of Microsoft, but that is what is available today.

The problem may be in that the rest of our departments' network is Windows 8.1 and the Surface Pros will be 10 (but will need to be able to access the windows 8.1 machines) so they have deal with that difference. and its the State so things happen slowly

Re: Microsoft Surface Tablet

Surface Laptop reviews look good. Higher then I thought given the limitations of 10S and the single USB port, but beyond those it appears to be just a really good laptop.

The Verge - https://www.theverge.com/2017/6/13/1...-laptop-review

Engadget - https://www.engadget.com/2017/06/13/...laptop-review/

I looked at it (and the Surface Pro) at a Microsoft Store over the weekend, nice looking devices.

Re: Microsoft Surface Tablet

I still havent gotten my work Surface Pro, which was ordered a year ago. IT department had a ton of programs order them so they got swamped and had issues since the Surface Pros needed Win 10 and everything else is on Win 8
