iPhone 5 rumors - Q2?

There are rumors of the iPhone 5 coming out in Q2 and sport a 4.6" screen. Interesting in the Reuters article is no mention of LTE, but there are plenty of LTE rumors out there too.

Reuters) - Apple Inc's new iPhone will have a sharper and bigger 4.6-inch "retina" display and is set to be launched around the second quarter, a South Korean media reported on Thursday.

Sales of the iPhone, first introduced in 2007 with the touch screen template now adopted by its rivals, account for around half Apple's total sales.

Apple has decided on the bigger 4.6-inch display for its next iPhone and started placing orders to its suppliers, the Maeil Business Newspaper said, quoting an unnamed industry source.

Its major display suppliers LG Display and Samsung Electronics Co declined to comment.

Samsung, which is also the biggest challenger to Apple in smartphones, uses 4.6-inch OLED display for its flagship Galaxy S II smartphone, introduced in April last year.

The high-definition "retina" display--containing several times as many pixels within the same area-- is used in the latest iPad released earlier this month.

The latest iPhone 4S was introduced in October last year.

Hmm, seems bigger then I would expect Apple to go to. I don't think it will be that large of a screen.

Most of the rumors are running around 3.7 to 4". I posted this because it came from Reuters.

Re: iPhone 5 rumors - Q2?

I agree with John Gruber:

Lots of attention on this rumor, but no one seems to be pointing out that if it’s true, this new iPhone would need way more pixels than the current 960  640 iPhone display. That means every app in the App Store would need to be redesigned/resized.

Sure, developers would get on board and support the new size. But why would Apple want to add another vector of fragmentation? For this reason and others, I say it’s bullshit.

Here's my only prediction: I will buy it.

I started off with the 3G, waited out 2 years for the 4, and I've been waiting out another 2 for the 5 to drop. I'm on a good every-other cycle.

My prediction is Apple goes 4". It's a nice round number, and big enough to stay competitive, without being so big as to be unweildy (a complaint often heard about these extra large Android phones). Also I expect they will keep the fall for iPhone releases, since iPad is early spring.

They may reduce the bezel to increase screen size without increasing the size of the overall phone.

The screen could go to 2" and people would still buy the fuck out of it.

That seems more likely than Apple increasing the size of the phone.

Re: iPhone 5 rumors - Q2?

I got used to the 4.65" screen on my Nexus pretty quickly, but I think 4" is the sweet spot for most people. Loved that size on my previous Galaxy S.

OT: But if I just got the 4s, and want to buy this with ATT, can I do so without penalty if I still pay the price for a new one?

Re: iPhone 5 rumors - Q2?

I have an iPhone 4, got it in release date, and I'm actually thinking on skipping another year. The 4 works perfect for me. LTE would be great, but I'm not that much in a situation where I really 3G and/or LTE.

When I upgraded from a 3G to a 4, the 3G was on its last legs, really slow phone at the time. But my 4 works perfect. No slowness whatsoever.

If I end up upgrading it will be because it's almost free, I can sell my 4 for almost the same price I would pay for a new iPhone with a 2 year contract.

Re: iPhone 5 rumors - Q2?

You can upgrade with no penalty if you pay full price for the phone, which is a bit over $600 for the newest iPhone model.

it would be interesting, and makes sense. they could keep the same resolution and it would still have a higher ppi than the new iPad. i know a lot of people don't want a huge phone.

Yes, a completely hypothetical situation proves that conclusively. Good job.

I can't see The New iPhone (you just know that's what they'll call it) dropping before the fall. The 4S just came out in October. I know the endless wanna-be phones, with their plastic bodies and their dreamsicle operating systems get refreshed about once a month, but Apple takes a longer view of things. Besides, the iPad was just updated, so they'll move on to something else before releasing anothe iOS device. Probably new laptops with the soon-to-be-released Ivy Bridge processor, then some sort of new pro machine for WWDC, along with Mountain Lion.

I'm also hearing rumblings of them dropping Macbooks below 17" and beefing up the Macbook Air line.

Re: iPhone 5 rumors - Q2?

Plus the approximate year over year cycle helps entice those with two year cell phone agreements. Why mess that up by introducing the next iteration early?

I thought they were streamlining the MacBook/MacBook Pro and MacBook Air lines together to make a definitive MacBook, instead of having two.

I'm in for the 5 this year regardless of what it is just because my old phone is garbage and my contract will be up for renewal around the time it comes out. I hope it's another Fall launch.

Glad to see you used a hypothetical straw man to bash Apple users.

After dealing with my daughter's Android phone, there is very little comparison. There is no one even competing with Apple at this point. It's pretty comical. Android phones outsell iPhones because they are cheaper impersonations not because they are superior.
