Advice please on Reinstalling Windows

I have an old HD from a previous system that had XP on it. I have since rebuilt my system and use that old drive as an extra internal drive because it has some files of use and some programs that only run on XP.

I have booted from this drive in the past with some quirky problems but successfully enough to run the programs I need to and then switch back to my C drive (Win7).

Now, however the drive has errors and wont boot. I can read from it fine but somethings up with the OS.

Can I reinstall XP to that drive without messing up my current C drive main OS? My fear is that somehow my system will think that drive is the new 'C' and make it the main.

The best thing to do, I think, would be to disconnect the Win 7 HD and connect the old one to install XP on it.

Use the XP Virtual PC in Windows 7 (or another VM solution) and put whatever you need specific to XP on that. Then reformat other drive for storage (or get rid of it if you think it's going bad).

well the situation I'm in is that I can't reinstall the software on another drive---long story.
I think fixing XP is my only choice really :\
