Large hard drive space - partition?

I just picked up a 2 TB Western Digitial external drive. My wife wanted one for the primary purpose of using it as back up for important docs, pictures, etc. I wanted to get some opinions as to what the best way it to store on such a large hard drive space. I wasn't sure if paritioning would help protect in case of corruption, or if just leaving it as is and storing just like that.

Thanks!

I wasn't sure if it got corrupt in any way that paritioning would help isolate what gets corrupted.

Re: Large hard drive space - partition?

2TB is fine as a single large partition. Above 2TB you can run into issues with 32bit Windows systems.

Re: Large hard drive space - partition?

Partitioning isn't really any defense against the type of data corruption you're talking about. That's why you need backups. Since this drive is already for backup, for the average user, I don't see any reason to have backups of backups.

Re: Large hard drive space - partition?

I would only partition if it made it easier to back up a partition rather than a set of directories.

One reason you might want to partition it is if you want to back up the PS3's hard drive. For that you need FAT32, and I wouldn't want to partition the whole thing in that filesystem.
