Which streaming services provide HD?

I know I can get VUDU HD on my PS3.... expensive though.

Amazon... I don't know. I don't have any of the equipment they require and their unbox player is so hated it scares me. Pass. I can stream their "normal" quality via my computer and it looks OK but far from great on my 73" TV. Also it seems to choke at least once per movie and as far as I can tell, no 5.1 or subtitles.

Netflix. As far as I can tell from their website there is no streaming HD. Correct? I tried them years ago and the PQ looked very soft. Has this changed?

Hulu plus. No idea. Anyone?

Any other options?

Netflix and Hulu both have HD stuff (varies greatly). The 5.1 sound depends on what you are streaming to on Netflix (I think). You can check out www.instantwatcher.com for a listing of all the HD stuff on Netflix.

Re: Which streaming services provide HD?

Just an update, they now have 5.1 streaming on Netflix through the 360. This used to be a HUGE pet peeve of mine, but I believe with the latest dashboard update it was enabled.

Now whether what you're streaming is available in 5.1 is another story.

Re: Which streaming services provide HD?

They all offer at least 720p HD content. The quality varies greatly by movie, device and connection speed. I haven't seen anything with that perfectly crisp Blu-ray quality. But it usually compares to HD cable and looks pretty nice.

Netflix uses adaptive streaming. It starts out at the lowest quality and gradually improves based on your connection speed. So at first it looks like crap. Give it a minute or two before judging the video quality.

Hulu Plus offers 720p video. And I think their audio is 2.0.

According to Amazon's Instant Video FAQ, their HD streams are 720p with 5.1 audio. I don't know about their Unbox Player, but I watch it on a Roku which you can get for $50. There's also a lot of TVs, Blu Players and DVRs with Amazon built-in.

Re: Which streaming services provide HD?

Thanks for the info.
Super website orangecrush, bookmarked.
Netflix isn't helping themselves at all. I couldn't tell from their site if they had HD at all or anything about it so the info really is helpful.
Turns out Amazon HD 720p worked the same as 480p once I found a trailer to try out. I don't know why they go through that muddle with unbox player and all that mess.
Glad to know HULU has 720p but honestly disappointed with their offerings.
Turns out that VUDU offers the best quality with 1080p offered but it is quite expensive.

Re: Which streaming services provide HD?

This is a pretty good article comparing the major streaming services. The full report is really interesting. It's from Feb. 2011, so some of the info is dated.

That's a great site.

There's also TV And Movies Now which lists both Netflix and Amazon.
