any recommendations for free Video Editing program

I've used Ulead Video Studio in the past and it was great, but I can't keep dishing out $60 everytime they upgrade or I change my OS. Now using Win7 64-bit and I've used Windows Live Movie Maker. It's easy and does just about everything I want except one thing - allow editing/cropping photos. I have a bunch of vertical photos that I'd like to crop/zoom in order to see them full screen, but since you can't do any in-program editing, you have to either view them with black bars on left and right making the pic small OR pre edit/crop before adding them to the media list (tedious).

It's a basic function and I was hoping there was something similar and easy to use like Windows Live Movie Maker. Anyone hear of FreeDVDCreator 2.0?
