What Could Be Causing My Computer Monitor to Click On and Off?

I'm pretty good at troubleshooting computers, but this one really has me stumped.

It started a week ago when I turned on my computer and noticed the monitor turned off completely during bootup. Then it came on for a second, then back off. It kept doing this on and off cycle like someone was flicking the power button on the monitor. I turned off the power to everything and rebooted. It came up just fine and stayed powered on.

The next day, same thing. I powered everything off again, but it kept doing it. I tried removing the power cable to the monitor and plugging it in, and that fixed the problem. The next day, that solution failed. I changed out power cables, and plugged into a wall socket by itself. It worked!

But now it's doing the same thing again, and none of my solutions will keep this damn thing powered on. It powers on during the BIOS screen then turns off when Windows XP tries to load. If it can just stay on until Windows finishes booting up, the monitor will run just fine until I turn off the computer.

Today I noticed that the front lights on my computer case stopped working. Computer still powered up. Monitor doing the same shit again. Could it be computer power supply issue? But the only thing going from the monitor to my computer is the monitor cable.

Another thing that makes me uneasy is two weeks ago, the lights in my kitchen would just flicker constantly. One of the bulbs went out completely then came back on, then it went out for good and the flickering stopped. The same night I fell asleep with my Xbox left on, and I woke up to find it powered off and the power brick had a red light. These events make me worried that something is wrong with the electrical wiring in my apartment, but I don't know how to prove that to the maintenance people here.

Thoughts/suggestions?

Re: What Could Be Causing My Computer Monitor to Click On and Off?

The monitor sounds like a failing capacitor, with the monitor failing to start itself up after a power down. There's several points during bootup that the PC cuts the signal to the monitor, and many monitors will power down when there's no signal. I've experienced this on several failing monitors. The power off/power on trick can typically work for maybe a week or so before the monitor will just not turn on at all.

You're right in that power to the monitor has nothing to do with the power supply of the PC.

As for the other issues, they could all be unrelated failures that just coincidentally happened near each other. However, you may want to get the wiring checked. I've never had to do this, but I would think you could just tell maintenance, "I've had a number of electrical devices crap out on me in a very short period of time. I would like you to check the wiring in my apartment to make sure that isn't the issue." If they do check it, make sure to find out what they checked and how.

Sounds like you have dirty power in your apartment. You should try a line conditioner or a UPS first and see if that fixes the problems. Based on what you've said, it doesn't sound like you have either of those currently. I'm assuming your electrical equipment is plugged either directly into the wall or into a power strip/surge suppressor?

I agree.

You would be wise to get a couple of APC uninterruptible power supplies to protect and condition power for your TV/XBOX and system. You have bad power apparently, which is unfortunately common in apartment complexes and the like. Not only do UPS's prevent damage and brownouts, they extend the life of electronics by providing conditioned power flow.

The monitor sounds like it might be damaged, very likely from a power event.

Check Provantage for prices on APC UPS stuff. They are a great shop with good prices. At least compare anywhere else to their prices.

I wouldn't necessarily agree with this conclusion. His monitor power supply could simply be more sensitive to the voltage fluctuations that his apartment is apparently experiencing. Before troubleshooting, repairing, or replacing the monitor, the first and cheapest thing to do is get it on a power conditioner or UPS, which he really needs for all his equipment anyway, and see if that resolves the issues. If it doesn't, THEN it's likely that the power supply was damaged.

Re: What Could Be Causing My Computer Monitor to Click On and Off?

Hey guys,

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm posting an update to the situation. I've been able to get by the last couple of weeks by leaving the monitor off completely, then booting up and then turning it on. However, last night, it started doing the on/off thing again while fully powered up. Definitely audible clicking noise. I figured the monitor was pretty much a goner.

I just bought a new monitor, plugged it in, and it powered on with no problems! After 15 minutes of use though, I noticed a disturbing occurance. The image on the screen was literally shimmering, waving back and forth. It did this for like a minute. I've never seen a monitor do this before.

I didn't tell the apartments about the electrical thing yet because I didn't want to risk going without power over the holidays and no more weird occurances elsewhere. Does this shimmering indicate a definite AC problem?

I've seen shimmering caused by a failing video adapter on the computer.
