My cable modem is making an audiable high pitched noise--what can I do?

It's not even a wifi emitting device! First I thought it was my TV, then my wifi router but no, by process of elimination my motorola modem is emitting a high pitched noise. Can anything be done?

Motorola SB6121

Take it back to your cable provider and get a new one. If it's one that you bought yourself, see if it's still under manufacturer's warranty, or an extended warranty with your credit card.

I guess I'm curious if this is a fluke thing or do they tend to make noise? Its hard to google
Lack of responses are kind of a good thing. A fluke can be fixed with a replacement.

I'm up to my 3rd modem. These things don't last that long.

USUALLY that high pitched noise is a bad electrical component of some sorts on the circuit board and/or a bad solder joint somewhere. Over time it turns into a high pitched wine even though everything appears to work ok.

The advice above to exchange it in some way (warranty replace it / buy a new modem / cable company swap) is the only way you are resolve it.

I am going to guess that you have something else going on with the connections on yours that is frying them. A spike coming in via the cable line will take them out quick, so will an AC power spike. Most people protect against the AC power spike (or try to anyway) but forget surges can come in the coax cable line too.

The worst 'spike' I have seen took out the cable modem AND the 3rd party router that was connected to it via an ethernet cable AND the NIC in the computer that was connected to the router, not pretty

That is a great possibility.

A guy from cablevision also told me Motorola modems gets replaced a lot with their customers.
