Is it possible to load some of MS Office onto an iPad?

Considering an iPad for the wife. One of the things important for her in a tablet is to have the ability to do some of her work and that would mean using some of MS Office, such as Excel. Of course then she'd have the need to save to a zip drive, yet another issue.

Is there a way to load MS Office onto an iPad (or any other tablet)?

FYI, One reason she is considering an iPad is the ability to FaceTime with her daughter who now has an iPad.

Apple has the iWork suite which does the standard doc formats. It's decent for basic stuff.

Pages (Word), Numbers (Excel), Keynote (Powerpoint) are the individual app names.

Using a cloud for storage is one option for moving files around. There are also apps that can transfer files directly to/from a pc over wireless net.

I'm guessing Microsoft has plans for a more mobile version of office for tablets, but I'd wager that it'll be 2013-ish. That doesn't help your wife now, though. Right now, your only real option for a fully functional version of Office is to get her a Windows 7 tablet of some kind, or a lightweight netbook/notebook/ultrabook. She could then use Skype to see/talk to her daughter.

Re: Is it possible to load some of MS Office onto an iPad?

iWork is pretty good, but a bit pricey on iPad (as apps go - each component is sold separately, and each costs $9.99). There is also a pretty good app called QuickOffice Pro HD, which includes (mostly) Office-compatible word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation components, and can be had for about half the price of iWorks (or less if you can get it when it is on sale). This is what I use.

There are also numerous reports circulating right now that Microsoft is planning to release Office for the iPad sometime next year. Whether that actually happens, who can say?

There are rumors that Microsoft is really close to releasing Office for the iPad.

In the meantime you can try office online, web version or something, to see how it works for you. You can also use Google Docs to read some Office files. I think Google Docs has more capabilities, at least the last time I tried both, but you should try to see if any of them really work for you.

i meant flash drive, sorry!

She would need to bring an Excel spreadsheet or file into her tablet, work on it then upload it back into her work laptop. She doesn't have the option of using another program.

You can view and edit Excel spreadsheets on an iPad using Documents To Go or Quickoffice.

If you use Apple's free iCloud service, the documents will stay in sync on her iPad and computer(s) (Mac and PC), so the latest version and changes will show up on all devices simultaneously, no matter which device she is using for the editing/creating.

I figured that was the case. I couldn't pass that up though.

I use Office^2 HD on my iPad. There don't seem to be too many compatibility issues, but I wouldn't recommend it if there are a lot of complex equations in her spreadsheets.

Re: Is it possible to load some of MS Office onto an iPad?

Microsoft has had a OneNote client for iPhone for a while now and just added iPad support. It isn't horrible, but the table rendering isn't great and I use tables a bunch. It syncs up with SkyDrive/Microsoft Office Live, so you can have your PC automatically sync to there and get it on the iPhone automatically.

They also just released a general SkyDrive client for iOS as well.

Re: Is it possible to load some of MS Office onto an iPad?

To get it (the document, spreadsheet, etc.) from one product to another (iPad to home computer for example) can't you just e-mail it from one device to the other?!

I don't own an iPad, but was thinking along those lines the other day and talking to a colleague from another office about it, but we ran out of time due to his getting hung-up on bragging about all of the apps which he has developed and I never got the answer to my simple question.

You can email documents to yourself but I've found the easier way would be to use Dropbox or Box. If you install either of them on each of your devices, the documents will be automatically updated whenever you edit them.

I use Quickoffice Pro for work on my iPad. I upload stuff to Dropbox and it syncs with my office computer. It's great. Just don't plan on using any major, advanced features of Office in those files.

Re: Is it possible to load some of MS Office onto an iPad?

On the plus side, the developers of QuickOffice do seem to be diligent in fixing bugs and adding new features. They just released an update a couple of days ago that adds several new compatibility features (such as cell merging, a huge missing feature for me in previous releases).

Until the official Office release (hopefully) next year, I'm pretty happy with QuickOffice.
