What's the best point and shoot I can get for $200?

Requirements:

* Unlimited movie mode
* 1080
* Great automatic mode shots inside AND outside

Would like:
* SD or microsd
* AA batteries

Particular to Canon, Sony, and Nikon, in that order, but would entertain others. Thanks!

Re: What's the best point and shoot I can get for $200?

Yea, that is "now" the problem. If you have a reasonable current generation phone, you likely have very close to the quality of camera of a less than $200 stand alone camera. I was just reading in the new Mens Health (I know, no camera expert - but makes sense) that you use your phone for quick pic's and buy a nicer high end camera for when it really matters.

Earlier this year I bought a small Canon camera to slip in the back pocket of my jeans. It was on clearance for like $110 and it got really good reviews when it sold for nearly $300. Alas, I find I rarely use it. My iPhone 4 is "close". No not as good, but close enough for email, facebook, small prints, etc. And it is so handy. IMO, the biggest issue with less expense cameras is the time they take to turn on and the shutter lag. And then the hassle of getting the pic's off the camera.

Again, not saying a $200 camera won't be better than a camera in a good phone. Just not sure enough better to justify the $200 and the hassle of keeping track of something else. 90% of my pics are for sharing and so easy to do that on the phone. And most people I share with look at on the phone, FB, computer, etc.

But if your determined, I'd probably look at a $300-$350 camera from late last year or early this year that they are replacing. Find a coupon to Office Depot, etc. See what's happening on black friday. And if I really felt a need to replace my little Canon, I'd move over to some of those "instant" on Sony's or something. And look for one with a wide angle lens.

Re: What's the best point and shoot I can get for $200?

you have to research the camera. years ago i've read that the MP numbers are not lies but the manufacturers engineer them to be able to hype high MP numbers but in reality the camera will perform a lot worse.

i have seen cameras that were rated as 4MP or so but outperformed 8MP cameras a few years ago due to better lenses. a lot of the point and shoots, especially the smallest ones have crappy lenses

No longer the most important factor. My phone is 5, my new Canon is 10 I think. For what I do, you can barely see a difference. The bigger issue is the lens. But still unless you plan on actually printing a lot of pics and printing them larger (or doing a lot of cropping), again, I don't think the difference worth it.

We are in a new world. Few people print pic's anymore and when they do only a select few. I think I saw somewhere that you are going on a big trip. If this is the purpose of the camera, I'd rent a pro-slr or something. Or if your getting this for all your outdoor activities, I'd look at some of those water resistant Olympus or other camera's.

As for Canon being the best, meh....I'm somewhat disappointed with mine. It is slow. Very slow in shutter lag and turning on. And again, it got really good reviews. Pic quality is fine, but again for posting, FB, a few prints here and there, I don't see it worth to carry around.

maybe i should have said in image quality.
and as far as renting a dslr....not sure how much that costs but she might as well pick up a used nikon d40 for $300. still a great camera despite its age and she would actually own something instead of just renting it.

megapixels are meaningless.

sensor size is where it's at.

I've been interested by the smaller systems...This is $290 on BF but does include a SD card and case. It is the Panasonic,

This one has a wide angle lens, which is appealing and in your budget,

When I see 10MP Polaroid cameras on the rack at Target for $75, something tells me that megapixels are not the critical spec to be looking for.

I bought a mint 32GB iPhone 4 (w/bad ESN) for $210 to use strictly as an iPod. There are plenty of reviews on the quality of the camera. With a little perseverance and luck you should be able to find a 16GB model for under $200 if you decided to go that route.

The phone cameras are good... But zoom on the point and clicks can come in very handy.

Re: What's the best point and shoot I can get for $200?

a 64gb sd card and 10 batteries?
be careful with the 64gb sd card. just because it has the space to hold thousands of pics doesnt mean it should. make sure to back it up daily otherwise you will lose all your pics if it fails or your camera is stolen. personally i would never buy a 64gb card for my camera. i have a bunch of 4gb cards that forces me to not be lazy and back up right away. and if it fails i dont lose everything ive shot in one day.

and why 10 batteries if you got the charger? do you plan on taking 2-4k pics a day?

Re: What's the best point and shoot I can get for $200?

$32 for all ten... Don't have to worry about how much video I can shoot per day. If it fills up, planning to go to the Israeli Walmart equivalent and putting them on CD. And I plan to back up to Netbook and external one terabyte hard drive daily. Cheap overkill

Card's supposedly a Sandisk with great reviews.

i guess if youre shooting video then its not such a bad idea. i never shoot vids so i tend to forget other people do.

and i think youre the queen of overkill lol.
