Best way to scan an external drive you think is infected?

Say you have a large external drive with data but probably a few viruses as well. These viruses were acquired under WinXP if that matters.

I want to start using this drive on a new Win7 system with kaspersky as the antivirus.

Is it a bad idea to just plug the drive in and do a complete scan? Is there a step that keeps virii from jumping over before/during scanning? Or is this how it's done?

The main thing is to make sure Autoplay is disabled:

Once autoplay is disabled, you can plug in the drive without anything on it automatically running. Then scan it using at least two different scanners. So once with Kaspersky, then another time with a free scanner like Malwarebytes.

Be sure not to open any files until the scans are done.
