iPhone/iPad wireless network speed issue

I have the ultra-common Linksys WRT54G. I currently have it set to G mode only for 54Mbps.

I recently upgraded my internet service from 8Mbps to 15Mbps. My wireless laptop can hit the 15Mbps speed no problem through speedtest.net, but both my iPad 2 and iPhone 4 are only speed testing at 11Mbps, which leads me to believe they are still only connecting at 802.11b, not G. As I mentioned I disabled mixed mode and left the router at G - channel 6 at 2.4Ghz to be exact.

I tried rebooting the Apple devices, forgetting and rejoining the networks with no luck. The router has been rebooted several times as well.

Anyone have any thoughts or experience on this issue?

Re: iPhone/iPad wireless network speed issue

i'll check at home with my N router, but the 54Mbps on the G is only hypothetical raw speed. i've read on the N standard they made a lot of changes to the protocol to make it faster. but in the real world you will hardly get anywhere close to the paper spec speed

probably a driver issue. what speed is your laptop? are you running the latest firmware on the router?

The laptop is fine; it's my Apple devices that don't seem to be connecting faster than B so I'm not sure how I'd resolve that through drivers. I thought Apple stuff "just worked".

If you are getting 11 Mbps you are at G speeds.

802.11b has theoretical speeds of 11Mbps, meaning in real life you'd never get those speeds.

OK, but why would the iPad and iPhone cap out at 11Mbps on the same router where my Windows 7 laptop is easily getting ~16Mbps? This surely indicates a difference in the way the Apple devices are connecting to my router.

Tested my iPhone 4s on my linksys e1000 and got 15.42mbps and 10.4mbPs on 2 different apps while streaming netflIx on my Ps3

Re: iPhone/iPad wireless network speed issue

On my iMac:

On my iPad 2:

Download: 8.21 Mbps
Upload: 0.83 Mbps
Ping: 73 ms

On my iPhone 4:

Download: 10.37 Mbps
Upload: 0.56 Mbps
Ping: 111 ms

And yes, I'm using a dual-band Airport Extreme as my wireless router.

I've always noticed all mobile devices have a "cap" on what they can take, I don't know the exact reasoning why though. Someone can fill us in.

I just want to know why my upload speeds suck today.

The only thing I can think of is to save battery. There may be a more technical explanation of course.

So it goes at 80% or something of the max speed.

I think I get 18Mbps in my iPhone and 24Mbps in my wired PC running Windows.

Re: iPhone/iPad wireless network speed issue

Matthew, does your iMac connect to the Airport Extreme router with an 802.11n wireless connection or a direct connection using a Cat 5/6 RJ-45 connector cable? If wired connection, that probably explains the 53 mbps download speed.

5 GHz 802.11n.

Wires are for the birds.

Re: iPhone/iPad wireless network speed issue

The airport express is 2 or 3 antennas and I bet the iMac is as well. Just like the MacBook pro's.
