Question on PCI Express 2.0 graphics cards and older mobo

I built a computer for audio recording in 20008 using this board:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813136038

It's the DFI BloodIron P35-T2RL. It's been rock solid running 4GB DDR2 800 RAM and a Q6600 quad-core. I put a BFGTech 8800GTX 768MB card which holds its own as well.

I'm going to get a new recording PC shortly and I wanted to upgrade this machine to play some new games (Skyrim, BF3, SW:TOR).

In looking over recommended requirements for Skyrim and BF3 it seems my 8800GTX is probably closer to the minimum requirements than recommended. I'd rather have the recommended beat so I can max out if possible or at least be on the higher end for graphics settings.

So my question - I notice all the new graphics cards are listed as PCI Express 2.0. Can you use these cards in a non-PCI-E 2.0 board slot, and if so, is there some loss of performance or other system compromise?

I'd rather not have to buy a new processor and mobo just to match a new video card.

Also, any graphics card recommendations are appreciated. I'm not opposed to spending up to $350 or so on the card. nVidia or ATI is fine. I have to upgrade the machine to Win7 64 from XP 32 so it's a brand new install anyway.

Re: Question on PCI Express 2.0 graphics cards and older mobo

The P35 is PCIE 1.1, which will most likely work fine with newer 2.0 cards. You shouldn't lose much performance because 1.1 spec shouldn't bottleneck a single card setup.

That said, there are some cards that are picky, so you should do a little research into any specific card you are considering.

Re: Question on PCI Express 2.0 graphics cards and older mobo

Thanks. I'm going to try an EVGA GTX 560 TI. I've read some stuff online with people using them fine with the Q6600. I'm going to finally OC the Q6600 up to 3Ghz. I don't think it should be too hard to do that. Plus I intend to run at 1920x1200 which in my understanding creates less of a bottleneck than lower resolutions (which I don't completely understand why - I would think it would be the opposite).
