Amazon's Kindle announcements today

Kindle Touch $99
Kindle Touch 3G $149
Kindle nontouch Wifi $79!
Kindle Fire 7" tablet device $199 with a month of prime

that pricing is pretty fantastic... making e-readers affordable to just about everyone.

The Kindle Fire is actually pretty nice looking thus far, curious to know what the specs are on it.

That said, it seems like Kindle Fire will almost require a Prime membership to get the most out of it.

Re: Amazon's Kindle announcements today

I'm following the liveblog on engadget. I like the look of the new Kindles. The $79 is the one w/ the ads, which still is great price!

I'm really surprised at the price of the Fire...but I am impressed so far.

Re: Amazon's Kindle announcements today

I was hoping the Kindle Fire would have a Pixel QI display, similar to the Notion Ink Adam tablet, but that would have been a bit more expensive, for sure.
At this point, I don't think the Kindle Fire is for me.
Amazon Prime, AFAIK, is essentially useless for Canadians. No video streaming, no free shipping, etc.

I have a 3rd gen Kindle (wifi + 3G). I'll probably pick up a Kindle Touch 3G, then my wife and I can fight over who gets which one. :)

Re: Amazon's Kindle announcements today

Shareholders seem to be happy, stock jumped up 7.56 so far today.

Apparently it's a 7-inch IPS screen with a dual core processor. Looks a little thick though.

Re: Amazon's Kindle announcements today

I like that there is only 1 version of the Fire (no different models based on GBs or 3g/wifi), but I'm not sure if I'm sold on cloud only. I'm guessing they are relying on the annual plans of Amazon Prime ($79) and cloud plans which give you 5GB free and then range from $20-$1,000.

RichC2 09-28-11 10:06 AM

Re: Amazon's Kindle announcements today

Actually the Cloud Plans are free (5gb) to $1,000.

People say you need at least 10 inches to be satisfied, but I think that 7 inches will do the job just fine.

Re: Amazon's Kindle announcements today

Well that's misleading. The prices for both the touch models stated at the event are for the ad versions. If you go to the site they are $30 more each without ads.

Drav3n 09-28-11 10:09 AM

Re: Amazon's Kindle announcements today

^ Yea, I forgot about the 5GB for free. I was just going back to edit that when I saw your response.

RichC2 09-28-11 10:10 AM

Re: Amazon's Kindle announcements today

...I see the ads version as a benefit considering some of the coupons that have been featured.

I'm happy with my 10 inches, but can't see anyone really being disappointed by 7.

The $79 kindle doesn't have a keyboard or a touchscreen? Search would be a nightmare on that thing.

Looks like they are keeping the Kindle 3 around as "Kindle Keyboard".

http://www.androidcentral.com/amazon...e-official-199

Specs include:

14.6 ounces
7-inch IPS display at 1024x600
Gorilla Glass
1GHz dual-core TI OMAP processorDual-core processor
Wifi-only
Whispersync
Amazon Silk browser
WiFi, no 3G option
8GB of on-board storage
Ok. So you atleast get 8GB on board, plus 5GB free of Cloud.

Interesting how going under $200 makes this an interesting product. The specs were leaked a few days ago but the price was supposed to be $250, almost no one was interested. But now that's $199 a lot more people are interested, including me.

Reserve now:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0051VVOB2

They say you don't need a computer, but I wonder if they will allow you to transfer media from your PC to your tablet. I will be really surprised if there isn't an option for that.

Interesting what they did with the Amazon Silk browser, but I don't think that's a problem anymore.

I'm confused, it mentioned the App Store so is this running a version of Android or is it a proprietary Amazon OS? If it's Android then I'm ordering one today, if not I'll wait and see.

Raul3 09-28-11 10:49 AM

Re: Amazon's Kindle announcements today

It's forked from Android.

It's supposed to be Amazon closed. So yeah, it's better to wait in your case.

I think 8GB of storage is very limiting too me. I like storing bunch of videos and podcasts when I go on travel and would like to have that stored without the need to access the Cloud.

Re: Amazon's Kindle announcements today

In theory, the specs are awesome. However, I don't like the proprietary Amazon junk on there. I want access to the Google Market. This will not be for me. Did they mention anything about the quad core tablet they are cooking up? Probably not since they don't want to cannibalize any sales of the Fire, but that one might have me more interested.

Timber 09-28-11 10:59 AM

Re: Amazon's Kindle announcements today

Well in theory there will be many Roms out there for this but you would you still be able to access and stream Prime?

Actually, $40 more. $139 and $189, respectively.

Not sure how I feel about that. I haven't used one "with ads" so I don't know how intrusive they can be.

Re: Amazon's Kindle announcements today

They are following the Apple model, closed ecosystem. If you already use and like their services this is a great deal. If the tablet doesn't any major issues, of course.

Those specs are about the same as a Blackberry Playbook but half the price.

It's weird, but the new white iPad 2 seems smaller than the original black iPad.
