Updated drives now USB ports wont work, including mouse...help!

Last night I stupidly used one of those driver update utilities and once it updated the various drivers it said were outdated, my USB ports all have the error Code 19 and will not work. My mouse won’t work due to this, so I tried uninstalling all the drivers in the device managers tab and rebooting using the keyboard, but each time, the error code is still there.

I even tried to do a System Restore, but apparently I have no points available prior to the install. When I try to go into the Windows Repair program from the boot screen, I am able to use the mouse so the port works there, but as soon as Windows loads the error comes right back.

I have tried to look for an answer online, but I am blocked from most blogs/forums at work (which is why I am asking here as I can access this site from work). I really don’t want to have to do a reinstall and lose all my programs, emails, etc.

Any ideas?

Thus sayeth Microsoft:

Code 19 means there is a driver conflict such as two devices trying to use the same resources.

Do these to clear corruption and repair/replace damaged/missing system files.

Run DiskCleanup - Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Cleanup

Start - type in Search box - COMMAND find at top of list - RIGHT CLICK - RUN AS ADMIN

sfc /scannow

How to analyze the log file entries that the Microsoft Windows Resource Checker (SFC.exe) program
generates in Windows Vista cbs.log

Then run checkdisk - schedule it to run at next start and then Apply OK your way out then restart.

-----------------------------------------------

Then lets refresh the USB Stack

Control Panel - Device Manager - USB Serial Controllers - RIGHT CLICK on EVERYTHING and UNINSTALL
all except the category itself - REBOOT - this refreshes the drive and the USB stack

This KB shows the XP how to and the Vista method is identical

USBDeview is a small utility that lists all USB devices that currently connected to your computer, as well as all USB devices that you previously used. Run it Options and check the 1st three choices to see if any are there.

http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html

You would remove all instances of the problem hubs and/or devices then reboot.

If needed try both of these :

Does your keyboard have that menu key? It would be next to the right control key.

You should be able to fake a right-click using the Application key -- that button to the right of the right Alt -- assuming you have one. (Then use arrows, Space, and Enter to navigate and fake right click.)

Looks like you've never mentioned which OS you're using, unless I missed it. You might want to add this info, in case it matters. I suspect it does.

Re: Updated drives now USB ports wont work, including mouse...help!

hit the start button and search for "mouse keys". Enable it and you can use the numberpad to move the mouse.

Here are the basics:
1-9 (except 5) = move the mouse.
5 = click
+ = double click
0 = hold down button
. = release button

/, *, - = Select the left, middle and right mouse button

So if you want to right click you hit '-' and then '5', then to get back to regular clicking press the '/' key. Although, if you right click to bring up a context menu it's easier to just use the arrow keys and enter to select a menu item.
