Unable to record onto DVD when the station is on a cable channel

I had a HDTV Cable Box since June and decided to record something for the first time yesterday. I discovered that when I tried to record a tv show from a cable channel like ESPN or TV Land, I could not. But when I tried to record from local or digital channels I was able to record with no problems.

Anyone know why this is the case?

Channels like locals are unencrypted. The cable box gets in the digital/HD encrypted channels plus the unencrypted ones.

I bet that if you unplug the cable from the cable box and plug to the tv, you will get maybe 70 unencrypted ANALOG cable channels eg ch2-70 plus the unencrypted local digital channels. You should be able to record all those with a VCR/DVD recorder, otherwise a DVR is needed.

You can't plug a cable wire into back of the tv anymore, that changed in 2009

No, that's for over-the-air (OTA) tv with antenna. The issue with that was older tube tvs didn't have a digital tuner (ATSC). HDTVs have the digital tuners.

There are no more analog OTA channels but there still are analog cable channels.

So why can't I record onto DVD from a cable channel while my DVD recorder is hooked up to a HDTV cable box?

Because those cable channels are encrypted - that is why you have the cable box. That is how cable companies control their customers - they want you to buy their DVR.

Without that box and the cable directly plugged to your tv/dvd recorder, you should be able to get some unencrypted analog cable channels and digital locals.

Re: Unable to record onto DVD when the station is on a cable channel

I have an HD cable box and have no problem recording any channel on my DVD recorder with a HDD.

As long as the cable goes from the wall into the cable box and then to the DVD recorder you shouldn't have a problem recording anything the cable box is sending to the recorder.

What do you get when you try to record onto a DVD?
Do you get an error message?
Does the machine engage the record mode and then stop?
Does it record but when you play back the disc you have no picture?
What channel is your DVD recorder set to?
Are you changing channels on the cable box, the DVD recorder, or the TV?

The picture becomes very JUMPY

I have Cablevision in NJ and can record anything that I want but I have heard of other cable companies copy protecting the signal so certain shows can't be recorded. I remember a few years ago some cable companies were doing it with sporting events on PPV and certain pay channels.

I can record off the regular comcast cable box, just not the HDTV Box

What type of cable connects the DVD writer to the cable box?

Assuming he is hooked up to the cable box, if it's a coax cable, he needs to make sure the DVD recorder is set to whatever channel it needs to be set to, like 2 or 3 or 4.

The only other thing I can think of is that there's a copy protection flag on the channel, which would block the DVD recorder from recording. The cable box isn't going to remove that.

That's what I was thinking. It looks like a Macrovision anti copy flag.

If you are using those, the recording will not be in HD any way so just use the non HD box.

But that's the only way that the DVD Recorder can be connected to the HDTV cable box.
