Re: RIP Facebook...introducing Google+

If Google doesn't open up google+ soon, it will face the same fate as Google Buzz. It's one thing to restrict access to something like GMail (back in the day) to generate buzz and hype, but it is nonsensical to limit access to a social network.

I don't think that's a problem.

...although I think it could be argued (correctly? incorrectly? no idea) that in a world where so many people have Twitter accounts and so many people have signed up with Facebook, the landscape is different now than it was then.

For Plus to be a Facebook killer for me, people I know would...y'know, have to use it. I have around fifteen friends on Plus, which is admittedly not much, but still, that place is a graveyard. A lot of people are desperate to get invites and see what it's all about, but if my circles of friends are any indication, they're not really doing anything once they poke their head in the door. The people I'm friends with on Plus post way more prolifically on Twitter and Facebook...if I'm lucky, I'll see two posts a day across everyone I know on Plus. Zero or one post a day isn't uncommon. I'm more the type to respond to what other people post than to put anything up myself, but since no one else is posting anything, there's not much for me to do on Plus.

Yeah, how many of those 10 million signed up, saw there was nobody on there they knew, and never logged back in?

10 million sounds like a lot, but it isn't. I don't have a google+ account. Nor do any of my Facebook friends. If people who DO have access don't have their friends on it, then they won't use it, and it will implode.

That's exactly what happened with Buzz. I had access, but nobody I knew did. So I stopped using it. And it turned out that many others did the same thing.

There is a window of opportunity, once that window closes then it becomes difficult if not impossible to gain enough momentum to reach escape velocity. I don't know when that window is, but I know that the longer it takes, the lower the chances for "success".

I think the last number I heard was 18 million now. I know quite a lot of folks on it already and starting to post stuff to their stream, so I think it's moving along nicely.

Re: RIP Facebook...introducing Google+

I've had an invite for a few weeks now. But the network has always been full.
How long am I supposed to wait to try the bastard thing?
To me it seems likes it will be nothing more than a flash in the pan unless they open the doors soon.

10 million for a service that's been in semi-public beta for under a month is phenomenal.

How long did it take for Google Buzz to amass 10 million users?

Buzz kind of integrated itself into gmail didn't it? Was there even a way to opt out of it?

If anyone has enough extra invites left over and wouldn't mind sending me one (PM)...It would be appreciated.

I give up.
For the first time in weeks the site invited me to sign in with my google ID. I login and it tells me they have exceeded capacity.
