Or something like that.

She's almost 12. Going to start 7 grade this fall, she's a geek, etc.

Do you know about any guide, not too technical?

Any site where she could upload her work, I guess we will start with HTML only first. But that shouldn't take more than a week to cover.

Re: So I want to teach my 11 year old daughter to create websites (?)

what's the point of HTML if there are automated tools that let you do it? if you're a pro then you need to know it but what's the point of teaching it to a child in 2011? it's not 1995 anymore

the cool thing for a kid would be not to learn to code a website but a simple web application with javascript. or teach her to code a simple smartphone application

I was thinking on starting with HTML the first week. And based on her feedback what to do next. Maybe she doesn't want to be too technical, so just teach her how to create/maintain a blog.

But yeah, I already googled "HTML".

Re: So I want to teach my 11 year old daughter to create websites (?)

I have a couple pieces of advice:

#1: Consider setting her up with a Wordpress install. She can start with the basics, and then dig into customization. I'm not sure how technically savvy you are, but it's pretty easy to install a local installation of Wordpress that she can play around with without being public on the web.

#2: Ignore any advice al_bundy gives in this thread (or in this forum in general).

In terms of hosting a bare bones web page, consider Google Sites. It's free, and it gives you full control over how public you want it to be.

Learning HTML is almost not worth it unless you also learn CSS.

not true at all

learning to hand code HTML for a simple learner website is an amazing skill to have. it's as awesome as making your own wheels than buying pre-made ones

for a non-techie SQL is probably good to learn. i've seen more than a few business analysts who know some SQL to be able to access company data

HTML is pretty much useless these days without CSS. I say this as someone who never bothered to learn CSS positioning and now I have to catch up.

Thanks, that's a great link.

And yeah, we are going to start with HTML, and based on her feedback we will see where to go next.

I'm thinking of something like:

- WWW Introduction
- HTML basic
- CSS (HTML5 ?)
- Javascript
- PHP or one of those.

That's for 1 month or something like that. It's summer vacation so I don't want to force this on her, so it'll be all based on her input.

I've never worked with PHP, but I know it's not that complicated if you want to keep it simple. I've worked with Perl, CGIs, ASPs, Java, etc. But the last 4-5 years I've been working with PLMs and stuff like that, more boring, more complex.

I say skip the website stuff and teach her how to make an android or iOS app. That's the future. Who knows, she may develop the next angry birds.

Re: So I want to teach my 11 year old daughter to create websites (?)

She already knows MS Office word, excel, ppt?

I'd show her how to make her own home page. Like make an html file with links and a picture then set that local file to be the browser's home page. She might like it and learn to add more complex things.

Groucho has some good suggestions.

Re: So I want to teach my 11 year old daughter to create websites (?)

what is the point in teaching her to program? is she interested? is she a math whiz and wants to tackle C++ or some engineering specialty? is she always on the computer and knows windows or OS X inside and out?

my older son is going to be 4 in a few months and i thought about a Macbook next year just because it's unix and i can teach him some basic shell commands

Re: So I want to teach my 11 year old daughter to create websites (?)

just adding onto the options.
- Agree on ignoring al_bundy
- If she really wants to code, put her on Ruby on Rails. First off its by far the fastest way to code websites, its useful in real life and if she wants a job later on in that space, she's set to start with 90% of the silicon valley web companies. if interested there are great, free tutorials online, video courses etc. most important of all to the patience of a 11 year old, you get results fast
- if she just wants to publish stuff, wordpress or similar is the way to go. lots of plugins to play with, easy and free.
- basic html is good to know, but as others have said, you must have css nowadays for it to be even remotely useful.
- dont code websites in any of the c languages... c# in .net would be the one to do if you were so inclined, but i see no reason to so. RoR is the way to go now.

Looks like your in the right track. Teach her the basics and let her explore and progress from there. Seems like kids are starting to learn to code early these days. Just read that this 15yr old sold his 1st tech startup. Started at age 6 with html, at age 7 started to learn Perl. http://http://www.geekwire.com/2011/...d-tech-startup

Re: So I want to teach my 11 year old daughter to create websites (?)

We started yesterday. A 30 minutes session. BTW, I'm the worst teacher ever, I could never work as teacher, I just don't have that kind of attitude (?).

But it went well, first I asked her, why do you want to learn how to build websites? Because looks like something interesting and next year it's part of my electives (in her school they have a set of classes they can choose, from arts, cooking, to robotics, web programming, etc.). So I guess that's good.

I started with an introduction of the web, what's a server, what's a client. I tried to keep it simple, like your IE browser it's a client, goes to the internet a contacts a server, and it sends back HTML. Nothing about clusters, or that kind of stuff.

So we started with the basic html tags, I made a lot of references to word, for better or worse. I introduced her to Notepad++ and showed her how to make changes to her HTML files and test the changes. Pretty simple.

So, that was it. I asked her if she had any question, her only question was if there was a way to put a picture as a background (What? is this 1995? LOL!) I showed her how to do that. Left her alone to play with the file and make some changes.

Today or tomorrow I think we are going to continue with basic HTML, how to create tables, lists (are they still used?), I have to look on what else we can cover.

After that we can start with CSS. I've never worked with CSS so I may learn a thing or two too.

By the way, I recommend focusing on HTML 5 and CSS 3 as these are rapidly becoming the new standards.
