Ipad Data Cost - Virgin Mobile The Cheapest Solution?

I really want to jump on the Ipad bandwagon, but I don't want to pay out the noise for data costs. Since I have very limited access to wifi connections, I need a 3G connection.

Yet from my research, Verizon don't offer jack, and ATT wants to charge you like 50 bucks for a measley 5 gigs! I want to use the Ipad for web browsing and watching a lot of youtube.

I did some research on Virgin Mobile, and it looks like their mifi device will connect to Ipad. They offer a $50 unlimited data plan, but the device costs $150 bucks.

Can anyone tell me if there any cheaper alternatives?

Do you have a cell phone (with data plan) you can tether to?

Verizon has a tiered plan for (rates are the same whether you have an iPad 3G or mifi -- their mifi device is free w/ 2-year contract):

$20 / 1gig
$35 / 3gigs
$50 / 5gigs
$80 / 10gigs

Or, just get an iPad 3G. The data plans are really good.

I tether my iPad to my Tmobile phone. I'm just paying for my phone data plan. I have not been charged yet for a tethering plan.

Did you bother to read any of the posts in this thread? The OP doesn't agree with your assessment and has found a cheaper rate elsewhere.

I agree that tethering is a good option if you have a phone that is capable.

I tether mine to Sprint, have WiFi only. Use it for hours at a time. Sprint doesn't meter out gigs yet and I'll enjoy that as long as it's offered.

I should point out: Getting a 3G model, even if you're going to tether, is worth considering because they have GPS receivers in them. The Wi-Fi only models don't.

I have a Virgin Mobile LG rumor touch with unlimited data. Any place I can get instructions on how to tether?

Android 2.2 has a Mobile AP function in the wireless settings. That is what I'm using. I don't think a wired tethering solution will work for iPad.

Forgot they don't have unlimited for $30 anymore, that's the one my wife has.

I think unlimited came back for a short time, but maybe only for the iPhone.

Anyway, $25 for 2 GB is not that bad if he's not using more than that.

Tethering may be the cheapest option if he has a phone that allows that. From the link Chrisedge posted that may not be the case.

I picked up 4 LG Optimus V phones for VirginMobile to migrate the family from our current T-Mobile contract. They work great in tethering. 3G with VM is everywhere locally (whereas 3G with T-Mobile is non-existent)

It's really a pretty unbeatable deal.

I have the Samsung Intercept (got 2 of them a while ago free with accumulated unused airtime) which was pretty sucky until the upgrade to Froyo 2.2 last weekend. Now it's fairly responsive and the tethering works well.

I let my service lapse and now they're begging me to come back and sent me a $10 coupon, so my next month will only be $15.

Did you have to install an app to tethering? The Rumor Touch really sucks. You can't download apps on it.

Yes, there's a free app on the Android Market to activate tethering on the Optimus.
The app is "Quick Settings".

the LG is about the price (or cheaper) than the MiFi plus you can keep your $25/month plan. You may need to root to install the wifi tether app.
