How to configure external monitor with laptop?

Have a laptop, and have monitor I use with it at work. Right now, it works fine, but when I close the lid on my laptop, the laptop screen doesn't turn off. If I set it up the one other way, they both go off when I shut the lid. Is there a way to configure this so that I can have the laptop closed with the screen off while my other monitor stays on?

Re: How to configure external monitor with laptop?

I think you have to do two things:
1) FN + F8 (Or whatever function key is equivalent on your laptop to use just the external monitor)
2) You should set the action of your laptop to "Do nothing" when you close the lid. Otherwise, I think it either hibernates, shuts down or is put on standby. (This is done on my laptop via Dell QuickSet)

Mine is a dell as well, and I put it to "do nothing" but that apparently also means don't even turn off the screen.

By pressing FN + F8, you can output to just the external monitor. And the screen of the laptop would turn off.

I think there are three options for FN + F8:
1) Laptop screen only
2) Laptop screen plus external monitor
3) External monitor only

Yep, the FN + function is generally a three-way toggle.
