Re: iPad Apps - Recommendations and Reviews

IMDB -- especially when used in horizontal mode is just a spectacular app -- a joy for movie buffs.

Instapaper Pro -- save web articles for later reading in your web browser, read them on in Instapaper on the iPad -- makes type highly readable, removes ads and other junk. Indispensable for reading in spots where you have no network connection.

Planets - very cool app for the astronomically inclined.

Now Playing -- *was* a great movie/theater listings app but 2 weeks ago the listings stopped updating. Any suggestions for a similar experience that actually works? (IIRC Fandango is iPhone only).

And yes, I have mentioned Air Video before -- it is a spectacular app.

Re: iPad Apps - Recommendations and Reviews

Ted - I use Flixster app for movies on my iPhone and my iPad (it's a universal app now). Nice little app, updates seem to be good. Also provides DVD news, upcoming movie news and box-office reports.

Netflix seems to be good on WiFi. Crosswords is nice if you like doing crosswords. MLB app is nice for Baseball fans. I agree on the IMDB app. Really well done and so much better than their website. I actually find myself using it all the time to look up info while watching shows/movies at home.

I use Flixster, as well. I got Air Video on Ted's recommendation and it is truly great.

Re: iPad Apps - Recommendations and Reviews

The NBA Playoffs (Sports, free) app is also pretty neat, but really only has one more day of use. The only "problem" I had was that I had to turn off notifications when using the iPad and watching the game with any kind of DVR delay, as it notifies you after each quarter and at the end of games.

Is there a (free) general sports scores update app? The ESPN iphone app is pretty good, but I think the one on the ipad costs money.

I use Evernote (Utility, free version with limited upload) as a basic notepad. It backs up your notes to the cloud (which may be a security concern with some people) which means that you can write notes and transfer them between PC, ipad, and iphone. The free version is pretty full featured, but has a limit (which I haven't yet reached) to how much you can upload.

Goodreader (utility, 99c) is a decent, cheap (99 cents) PDF reader, and it also reads other file formats like Microsoft Office.

Cloudreader (Utility, free) is a free app that can also read PDFs, though I haven't really used it for that, because it can also read .cbz comic archive files! Some of the other comic cbz reading apps are probably better, especially at organizing content, but this one is free and works well. I also have ComicReader Mobi, but it unfortunately got delisted for a year.

Re: iPad Apps - Recommendations and Reviews

I have found out that accessing ESPN directly through Safari is the best option for sports updates. You can view all the videos without issue. And in full screen!
That have worked perfect for me now with the World Cup.

I really hope you don't mean the comments section? That is a horrible, horrible place where people keep asking if this actress is hot or happens to look like another actress?

Re: iPad Apps - Recommendations and Reviews

A few of my favorites:

Comics - very cool app if you don't mind buying comics. They cost about $1 (to $2) a piece, have a cool way of displaying (single-panel mode), plus you can view them online anywhere at comics.comixology.com

My Movies Rack - iPhone app (iPad version coming soon) - connects to your DVD Profiler to bring your collection listing on the go (great for those with thousands of discs who sometimes forget if they own something already).

FixPix - Also an iPhone app, very fun game

MotionX Drive GPS HD - GPS for your iPad (3G).

Photo apps: Photo FX Ultra, Filterstorm, TouchRetouch HD, Tiltshiftgen

I've never read the comments, wouldn't know. WHat I'm referring to is having the full cast on the along the left side, etc. It is a very well designed app -- I can lose myself for hours going through people's filmographies.

Re: iPad Apps - Recommendations and Reviews

So I have the Angry Birds app for my iphone... And love it, not sure if I should upgrade to the iPad version or not. Anything extra? The comments say no, but I can never trust them. Getting the Flixster app though thanks to the recommends here.

I opted not to buy the (overpriced IMO) Angry Birds HD version. The iPhone version scales pretty well. I played the iPad version on a friend's iPad, and while it looked nicer, it wasn't $6 extra nicer.

Re: iPad Apps - Recommendations and Reviews

Pages - Surprisingly full featured word processing program. Typing actually isn't bad on it. Worth the $10.

Mirrors Edge - By far the best game I've played on the iPad. Addictive and better than the 360/PS3 version. Even though I finished it long ago, I still regularly play levels over again.

Pinball HD - Second best game I've bought.

Elements - When the iPad was released, publications were raving about this App, so I bought it to see what the hype was about. I can't figure it out. Waste of my money.

Netflix - Great app, and movies play very well over wifi.

Life - Best web browser I've seen...even better than Atomic.

Same company, comixology. What impresses me is that they have Justice League Generation Lost, which is a current miniseries. I think all of the Marvel stuff I looked at was at least a few months old. I've been meaning to track down issues 3 and 4, so I might just buy them here for a dollar off.
