Actually, the nook (which also supports epub) is a cinch to sideload as well, at least from what I've used of it.

Best Buy also advertised a $50 Barnes & Noble gift card promotion in their weekly ad. You get the gift card free with the purchase of a nook. They have already discounted the 3G/Wi-Fi version to $199.99. The promotion has disappeared from their site, but the sign was still up in the store today. The cashier had to call a manager, but he looked at the ad and looked at the sign on the shelf. He allowed the cashier to override the price, and I was able to get the nook and the $50 gift card for $211 with tax.

I've been on the fence about the nook, but the combination of the price drop and free gift card was enough for me to give it a chance.

I guess. I was hoping to see an overview of all three options.

I've got an itch for a nook now, just due to that $149 pricing. For me, it's print books all the way.

Not surprisingly, the Kindle just dropped to $189.

The Sony e-reader supports more formats than the Nook does, IIRC.

Or the iPad for that matter, unless you find an app. I will say that the touchscreen is my favorite way to turn pages. Never having to hold your hand a certain way to press a button is nice.

The Sony definitely supports more formats than the iPad. I still can't believe someone hasn't made a nice universal e-reader for the iPad. They could charge $30 for the app and avid readers would still buy it and consider it a bargain.

I like the Kindle, but I've been using the nook for several weeks now and it is not an inferior device to the Kindle. The choice between it and the Kindle really comes down to whether you prefer Amazon as your bookstore. IMO the Kindle's lack of ePub support puts it behind the nook, but if you don't want books from the library or ePubs in general or you don't mind breaking DRM and converting your ePubs it is pretty much dead even between them. Same eink screen quality and same speed opening and navigating books. Those are the two big factors that matter.

For $149 I can't recommend the Wi-Fi only nook enough. Most people don't need 3G since they will probably have their home Wi-Fi or home computer to buy books with and it is the best dedicated ebook device you can buy at that price point.

Couldn't agree more. Great price, great device.

Re: Nook vs iPad: who is the better reader

I finished my first book on my new iPad, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, and didn't experience any eye fatigue or issues.

Coupled with everything else the iPad can do, I couldn't be happier.

I've read a bunch of books on the iPad and have had the same experience as you. For me, it's easier on my eyes than reading a paperback by far. I'm in front of an LCD monitor for 8-9 hours a day already, so I'm not surprised I didn't have any problems.

Re: Nook vs iPad: who is the better reader

So it looks like the new Kindle will be 189 or 139 for the wifi only version. 139 is tempting.

Re: Nook vs iPad: who is the better reader

Yeah I am probably going to pre-order the 189$ version this week.

Trying to find a decent case on Amazon first so I can order it all together.

Here is the one I am considering ordering.

I know I will end up having to hunt down a booklight and the one I currently have doesn't work well. The idea of one built into the jacket is kind of cool.

I just wish it was non-leather.

Re: Nook vs iPad: who is the better reader

What do you really need 3G service for on these things? I know the nook has a basic web browser but I have an iPhone so I don't need that. So basically for the Kindle it's just for the option of being able to DL anything on a whim?

Just wondering because I want to get one and the new cheaper Wi-Fi only option looks appealing if I really don't need 3G for much else then DL'ing a new book. I can preload enough books to last me years.

Ok is that is really the only advantage of having 3G I could really care less about it and will be glad to save some extra cash.

Re: Nook vs iPad: who is the better reader

Pre-ordered the $139 version this morning, with gift cards it came out to be $32. I don't need no 3G on this thing...
