D90 is more rugged, shoots at a faster rate, accepts more lenses, and has more manual overrides. It is also heavier, more complicated, more expensive, and likely to be replaced in the Fall or Spring at the latest. The D5000 is more than competent for any beginner and does a fine job. With the same lens and settings you will get the same image on either camera.

D90 is heavier, more rugged, has an auto-focus mechanism on the body has a wireless commander feature with which you can control Speedlights, additional buttons for controlling ISO directly, depth-of-field preview, etc.

D5000 below requires that you use AF-S designated lenses in order to be able to auto-focus.

If you're a beginner, the D5000 would be more than enough. Once you grow into it and start wanting those additional features, that's the time you go for the D90.

Re: Nikon d3000 vs d5000 vs d90 model

Depends on how you look at my back ground. I was a pro (news, ads) for a short bit back in the late 70s, early 80s. I came to Calif to take pictures for the OC Register but moved into another part (A shitload more pay). I went to work on computers software, then being coming the customer from hell, the internet, then to Ricoh. When in a weekend I went from R&D of the CDRW/DVD Writer/Reader to the RDC-5000, then the RDC-5500 to Sr Tech of the "I" (RCD-I700 & I800).

The small point and shoot even if I had a hand in some of the older models really never gave me the feel of using a real camera.

These units/cameras would mean I would becoming a beginner again that is not that big of a deal too me. I have heard that some of these models would and can use some of the older stuff. That is something that I like. Same with the weight. I have seen all the camera this weekend end. The d3000 is no longer in the running. The D5000 and D90 (or the new model) is. Still all in all I do come from both the new and old school. I like to use a camera, and some times like the idea of the point and shoot.

I have even looked at the Cannon, but never would again own a Olympus (An I can get these for free).

If you want one that would can autofocus using older Nikon lenses then D90 is the entry-level for that. Older non-"AF-S" lenses will not autofocus on the D5000, D40, D60, D3000.

Go with the D90, there are very few AF-S prime lenses and that sounds like something you might find interesting. With the D90 you can still use them.

I went with both the D5000 & D90. More then likely I will be keeping the D90. After a bit it feels nicer and I like the way it handles.
