I am looking to purchase a new notebook computer and I need some help. Here is what I want this computer to do:

  • Email and internet
  • Word processing (Word, Excel)
  • Engineering programs (MATLAB, Mathematica, PSPICE, XILINX)
  • The occasional game (NHL 2K1, Diablo II)

I want to create a wireless network in my house for the notebook, but I suspect this can be done with any notbook and the right hardware. I don't care about DVD playback and CD-R/RW features. (I have a DVD player in my HT and my desktop has a CD-R/RW drive). What are my best options as far as quality and price? I have looked at Dell models (I think it was the 4000e). I am looking to spend under $2k (if possible).

Many thanks in advance!

Under 2k you can easily get what you are looking for I'd say. Look at something like the IBM 41U, it's much cheaper than 2k and would do what you are looking for.

I should add though, I don't know about the video card in that laptop, 4 megs
