Htc evo 4g - Holy Crap!

http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/23/h...uperphone-armo

We've been rumoring a WiMAX "HTC Supersonic" for a while now, and Sprint just dropped the hard news: the phone will be dubbed the HTC EVO 4G, will be released this Summer and it's easily the best specced phone we've ever witnessed. The hardware is of quite obvious HD2 descent, but with Android onboard and some nice aesthetic tweaks, the EVO 4G takes on a life of its own. The handset is centered around a 480 x 800 4.3-inch TFT LCD, with a Snapdragon QSD8650 1GHz processor under the hood (the CDMA version of the QSD8250 in the HD2 and Nexus One), and even a helpful 1GB of built-in memory and 512MB of RAM -- hello app storage! Even the battery is bigger than the HD2, and the camera is an 8 megapixel monstrosity with flash, that's capable of 720p video, and is augmented by a 1.3 megapixel front facing camera for good measure. The phone features HDMI out (though you'll need an adapter for turning it into a TV-familiar HDMI plug), 802.11b/g WiFi, and an 8GB microSD card. There's that still-rare Android 2.1 underneath an updated version of HTC's Sense UI. But... despite all these wild features, what actually sets the EVO 4G apart is the fact that it's Sprint's first 4G phone. The handset runs a combo of EV-DO Rev. A and WiMAX, with calls still being made over CDMA and the EV-DO / WiMAX options for data. Interestingly, it sounds like concurrent data and voice use might be possible for the first time on CDMA carrier in this way (killing AT&T's well-advertised differentiator), though Sprint says that's still in the testing phase. One other new feature is the Sprint hotspot app, another MiFi-style connection sharing number, which is obviously aided greatly by the WiMAX on board and can support up to eight concurrent users. Follow after the break for our hands-on impressions and videos of the phone in action, including an up-close-and-personal test of the touchscreen keyboard. Below you'll find galleries of the phone by its lonesome and up against the Nexus One and iPhone 3G.

This phone is intense. I'm not switching off of Verizon anytime soon, but if I were, damn this would be tempting.

Nice. These "phones" are getting out of control. But in a good way.

Finally Sprint seems to be getting a phone with a decent amount of internal memory.

I didn't highlight it but it comes with an 8 GB card in addition to the built in memory.

Just wish it wasn't on Sprint. Their service is terrible here

It's $200 on contract.

This is a great phone, but I hate the OS. I'm selling my HTC TP2 to a friend and getting a HD2 in a few months when the VZW version comes out. The keyboard is nice, but the HD2 simply blows it away when it comes to processing power and feature set. And I still like Windows mobile the best.

Really? I really like the Sense UI / Android combo.

Curious when this will be released.

Damn. If Apple doesn't come out with a new phone that blows this out of the water come June I feel like this phone could actually make me leave AT&T!

Any chance it will come to AT&T and Verizon (I'm not as concerned about the 4G although that is nice)?

Looks really nice, I mean the specs look really nice. Too bad about being Sprint. Although being an ATT user can't say much. My iPhone basically doesn't work when I'm in big gatherings, concerts, stadiums, etc.

I think I like the Nexus One and Xperia X10 more... but damn, this is turning out to be a great year for Android phones!

It's a great phone - but Sprint is terrible here. The Verizon version (Incredible?) is rumored to be released soon. Of course, minus the "4G" aspect.

I have Sprint currently. This phone is supposed to come out in the summer. I have been holding out on buying a new phone for a nice Android phone with the new $70 plan. This may be that phone.

And the Verizon version will only have Windows Mobile 6.5, IIRC. Not upgradeable to 7, either.

The rumored HTC Incredible is Android, not Windows Mobile.

T-Mobile has the HD2, which is similar in hardware spec but running Windows Mobile 6.5. That came out today, actually.

Re: Htc evo 4g - Holy Crap!

I know I'm going off topic here but I think it's stupid that the HD2 won't be upgradable to 7 purely because it has face buttons, which isn't part of the WinMo 7 spec...

The Evo looks very slick. Too bad it'll be on Sprint to start.

Someone will hack it. Just like I have a Diamond running Windows 6.5.5 and Sense UI 2.5...

The PPC community is impressive.

Re: Htc evo 4g - Holy Crap!

Are the prices really so drastically different when it comes to smartphones? I'm paying maybe a few dollars less on Verizon for the Droid than I was paying AT&T for the iPhone.

Re: Htc evo 4g - Holy Crap!

I think the one common trend among all providers is that the customer gets raped for text messages relative to what it costs the provider. But, I guess there's additional value there if people are willing to pay for what really should come free with voice and data.
