is it possible to uninstall windows updates without reinstalling windows? I got an UDMA66 update (or something like that) and it failed the first time, then installed the second try and now I have to reboot from the device manager to be able to access my cd rom drives.

yep
go to the product update page
once in there, you can view the ones you have installed.. and there should be an unistall option by each of them
