Is there really that big of a difference. Or are they pretty much the same.

amd is better for gaming, intel is better for everything else

you wont notice much difference one way or the other. with the exception of support for other hardware (motherboard, memory, etc..)

The Intel Vs AMD issue is like the Coke Vs Pepsi issue.

WAY OVERUSED!

there are some incompatibility issues with AMD's and other hardware, most notably graphics cards.

Im looking into buying a new computer. I have the choice between the two different chips.

The pentium 3 or the Amd chip.

What are you going to do with it? Is noise a consideration? Price/speed damn_important?

I will be using it for Video games, personal home use, designing, small buisness stuff.

Noise not really a factor but i do not want something extreamly loud. I asume you are talking about the fan.

Yep. You really have to cool the AMD chip. I have no experience with gaming, so I'm not the best to answer. I have experience with home theater computers where you want performance and need silence. Intel is good for that due to much less cooling requirements.

AMD Athlons are very good. I have one and I never had a problem. I don't know if it is the same where you live but here an AMD T-Bird 1.1 Ghz is HALF, yes HALF the price of a P3 1.0 Ghz! You have to be crazy to waste money on an intel processor IMO!

I'd like some specific examples of such incompabilities. If you are talking about the nVidia cards, that was corrected a LONG time ago and it only happened with the first generation of Athlon (The Duron and T-Bird being the 3rd and 4th).

Do you know that if you have a P3 Coppermine and a SoundBlaster Live not using the lastest Liverware (using the one on the CD that came with the sound card) and you try to play a sound (any sound, even the windows sound) you will get a blue screen of death?

There was some major problems with the AMD pre-Athlon processors but now they work pretty well. Of course you can always have some problems with new technology, AMD or intel, but they will correct it.

For speed (games, work...) and price: AMD

If you want some cool MMX dancing guys, you trust the intel slogan: "Pentium3 optimized for internet" and you have too much money to spend go for intel, you won't be disapointed (specially for the money part).

That's my opinion, you don't have to agree with it. Some day all intel fans will see the light (yep I used to be a die hard intel fan, kept saying that AMD was the crappiest company but AMD finally made some awesome processors and intel went crazy with their prices)

Nope, Via bought them. They are still releasing processors (bad processors).

Here is the official info from the Via site:
http://www.via.com.tw/products/cyr3.htm

Want an advice? AVOID them! They are becoming worst with every new releases (if you compare them to AMD and intel)

Being an AMD fan I had to correct you

Saying Cyrix is AMD is like saying VHS is DVD

Sorry. But acquiring a company does not make the acquirer the acquired. Sometimes the acquirer can learn something or just eliminate the competition.
