Running programs from an external HDD that used to be internal

My father has a flight sim program on his laptop that he cannot freshly install onto another HDD (he lost the extra scenery/plane discs).

If he were to get a new computer in the future (laptop or otherwise) would I be able to put his current drive into an external case and run the program off of it in the external case?

Or will Windows say "no way!" because both the current HDD and the older (now external) drive both have a full install of Windows on them (Win7 & XP respectively)?

I could never figure out how to do that with programs on an external. Hopefully someone knows a way

This really depends on the exact program and what the installer for it does.

I will say in MOST cases, you can not easily do what you are asking.

In some cases, it works, in some cases you can copy files and make regisry edits to make it work (usually not worth the time and effort).

Find a way to re-install it fresh..

Should he get a new computer, I'll have to see exactly what/where the expansion scenes & planes were installed.

It might be possible to just copy what scenes/planes he has into a fresh install.
