What is a "base system device"?

On my netbook, i see in the device manager that the "base system device" is not functioning properly. what exactly is this?

If it makes any difference, I have the Sony VAIO W121 VPCW121AX running Windows 7.

Have you checked with Sony for support?

That might be a card reader

You probably need drivers for something on the laptop. Head to the Sony driver download page and compare the list of drivers to the list of devices. When you see something missing, install the drivers.

Other Sony Vaio owners have had this problem, and it's the card reader driver:

what's weird is the card reader works. i tried an SD card, it read perfectly. but i'll give the drivers a try anyways. thanks!
