Google plans to offer broadband service

Google is getting into the broadband business, taking on the cable and telephone companies in an effort to make speedy Internet access available to more people.

The Internet giant announced on its blog Wednesday that it planned to deploy a fiber-optic network to at least 50,000 homes and as many as 500,000. The network will deliver faster Internet speed at a competitive price, the company said.

It will begin by building and testing broadband networks in a small number of trial locations across the United States. Communities that want to be considered can apply here.

Google has been using its muscle to make the Internet faster and more widely available on desktops and on mobile phones. This move is likely to create additional pressure for global broadband access.

It's always good to have more competition. But they don't state where this is going to start.

Lol, what is the next article?

Google getting in to the "God" business.

Google today announced that they are going to start playing god. They will only require you to worship them for 1 hour every other tuesday every month. This will be a great deal for anyone who doesn't have much time to worship anything. Google said that if you follow the program you will get into gheaven, which a spokesman said is just like heaven only with complete broadband service branded by google.

Great. So instead of just gathing your information when you do a search on their site or use their email, they're going for all of your internet behavior.

I love Google and Gmail, but as you said, them gathering all of my internet behaviour does not sound appealing.

Considering how shitty my Cablevision broadband is, I'm ready to try anything.

Re: Google plans to offer broadband service

I had FIOS fiber when I lived in Texas. I'd love to have that kind of speed again. I think hard line internet access is not the way of the future though. I think they should be putting more effort into broadband wireless connectivity. 3G is fine for a phone but not good enough for home service.
