Gadget recommendations - laptop -> TV, hard drive -> TV, record HD TV for transport

Not sure if this would be tech issue or Home Theater so I'll start here. If mods feel it needs move, not a problem.

I'm a gadget person and am wanting to accomplish the following (I'm using Windows 7):

Work on laptop, see it on my plasma widescreen.

Play digital movies from a backup hard drive on said plasma TV.

Record HD TV to be able to take with me on a portable hard drive to view on my laptop.

Netgear Push2TV box would work for the first issue.

Western Digital HD Media player would solve the second.

Slingbox would solve the third issue (but only where I had a connection to the net).

Is there one piece of hardware could solve all three?

Thanks!

either build/buy HTPC with a portable hard drive or just connect your laptop to your TV with an HDMI cable

Unfortunately my plasma is pre-HDMI. Building an HTPC is out due to time constraints. Wouldn't buying an HTPC cost more than the three separate components or would you recommend a specific model? I'm not very familiar with them.

How about something like this for your laptop? I'm assuming it has a component connection even if there is no HDMI.

Edit: Nevermind, it says it doesn't work with computer output. Strange.

Thanks anyway. I already own a WD HD Media player so I guess I need to decide whether to add more or go to a HTPC. Not really up on the HTPC's.

What inputs does your TV have? It's Pre-HDMI, but does it support DVI? VGA? Component?

2 Components (they are full, from cable box & dvd player) plus RCA video in, S video in & PC RBG.
