Recommendation for anti-virus software for a small company?

I'm looking for an anti-virus package for about 5 or so computers.

What is the best one?

Are there small company, multi-computer versions available in this small number or should each user just get their own copy?

Thanks!

Re: Recommendation for anti-virus software for a small company?

The best one is subjective (fastest, best detection, etc, etc)

I really don't consider a 5 person business to need anything more than 5 separate home users. In other words, you don't need central management like a major corporation would benefit from.

I would go roughly in this order

Kaspersky or Symantec EP
Avira or Bitdefender or NOD32
Mcafee

5 pcs for small business use should be about $150 or so regular price

You can buy 5 individual home license use for less for some of these off fatwallet deals

See what you can find for pricing and let that decide, all are good enough for single line defense

I still like to use multiple tools...

Its been receiving rave reviews on sites like LifeHacker and CNET, plus I use it religiously on all my side work now: Microsoft Security Essentials. 100% free and it catches roughly 99.92% of everything out there.

Nice, I hadn't heard about this. I've been using a "trial" version of AVG for a while and while I like if if this is a legit free anti-virus I might give it a try.

Another for MSE. I've been using it on all my side work as well. Really low overhead, great for older PCs.

After numerous problems with the professional version of McAfee, I switched to MSE in the last month. Very pleased with the decision.

Re: Recommendation for anti-virus software for a small company?

I should have said that the information that this company deals with is extremely sensitive and needs to remain confidential. This is the first time we're potentially exposing any part of the network to the internet. In fact, most computers were previously operating in a DOS-only environment with custom-built apps and networked to a fileserver that wasn't attached to the internet.

We're going to restrict most machines to be able to access only particular commercial sites used by the industry. But some users will probably be doing email.

Would MSE be considered adequate here? Or would even Symantec or one of the other big names?

Re: Recommendation for anti-virus software for a small company?

MSE is great, but it's really just for consumers and M$ has a new business security software called Forefront that's not out yet.

On the other hand, MSE should be fine for such a small number of computers, but I think its options are limited and is slower at doing full scans because of lower CPU use (around 20%). While the Symantec corp full scans were much faster but would use up to 100% CPU.

If I was really worried about security, I would use the F-Secure stuff which uses up tons of resources but is often top-rated.

If its that serious, get an IDS/IPS on top of your AV tool. AV tools are meant to stop the little toy virui in the xmas card emails, you need to have that and a level or two beyond.

If you don't want to drop $10k, look at this http://www.snort.org/

Remember what Google said they found the Chinese doing? If they have any idea you have something on your network they might want, you will never see them coming. The best you can do is hope to catch them before they leave and figure out what it is they saw...

For an environment that small, buy them all new computers and setup a separate network to get out on the internets

edit - ok maybe not $10k, but $6k

I don't think we'll have the Chinese snooping as this stuff probably isn't of much interest to them, but other people may have similar abilities.

If we restrict the outbound IP addresses that can be accessed through the firewall would we be protected from those types of attacks? They don't email stuff out, do they?

We're not going to allow USB storage devices or anything like that on the computers and there won't be any computers leaving the office.

Re: Recommendation for anti-virus software for a small company?

IP addresses can be spoofed very easily

Again, this is all about who you are trying to stop and why.

IMO - You really need a system that will inspect what is going on inside packets and not make assumptions.

I also would ask what your legal liability is if you design this system to 'protect' them and they get hacked. Make sure they sign something that states you are not responsible for data breach or loss (I am sure you know that already)

I would give a look at Sunbelt Software's Viper, it is lightweight and doesn't swallow resources like more mainstream vendor products.

I used Viper for two years, before switching to the free M$ product. Many of these vendors are going to want you to select a business class product that can be managed from a central server. That is overkill for 5 PCs.

That's kind of my thinking about Symantec EP. Is Norton Internet Security or Norton AntiVirus going to be about the same without the central management?

No doubt, I rolled it out at my old job like two years ago. I'd consider it way overkill for a small office, though.
