looking for feedback about a laptop

OK, I looking to buy a laptop, so I can make the room we use as an office a bedroom again, so I just want something that I can pull out and throw on the coffee table while I watch TV, or that my wife can put on her lap to do paperwoork or homework. My nephew plays Webkins and Nicktopia type games on it occasionally, and mostly, we use it surf the internet and watch video, download music, and pictures...rarely will we ever take this out of the house, except on vacation. I am pretty much sold on this one from Toshiba, but i looked at some reviews of the video card that were harsh, but it was on a gaming site and i really don't understand how it will translate to what i want to do with it, which is what i described above. Any feedback would be very appreciated.

Re: looking for feedback about a laptop

check out Toshiba's website. for that price you should be able to get a laptop with one of the new core i5 CPU's. Core 2 Duo is obsolete

Why do you want that particular one? Forget about gaming on that graphics card, at least games like Modern Warfare 2. You can run games like WoW at all low settings, same with the Sims 3.

For what you want, you can go cheaper. The Core 2 Duo is still good, unless you always need the best and most up to date processor.

I have been looking at alot of them, but I was looking at that one, because the screen was so big, and it seemed like the big drawback was that it was less portable than others and portablility was one of the things that wasn;t important to me...then as i looked further, i saw that the video card was a big complaint, so that was why I asked how much it would affect what i wanted to do. Also, I am looking to buy it at Best buy, because I have a card there and can make payment for 18 months without interest...

So...now, i have been looking at the others with a screen of comparable size...first, there are no laptops with i5 processors at all there, there are some with i7, but no i5. It seems like if I get both the i7 and a screen that size, I'm gonna break a $1000 and I really didnt want to do that...

What about any of these:

This one is an AMD processor, and I had a desktop with an AMD, but i have no idea about this one...

These ones has the same video card as the first toshiba...

Re: looking for feedback about a laptop

The first one you linked is the one I got a couple weeks ago. It was marked down to $629 in the Best Buy I went to. I like it alot, it's fast, the screen is very large and clear, it doesn't weigh a ton, and it just feels well made.

I know it's an HP and has an AMD chip, but I'd definitely say go with that one.

If you want anymore info on it just ask.

The funny thing is the Dell you linked is the old laptop I had, just with an newer chip, and bigger hdd. I'd avoid it like the plague. Overpriced, crappy speakers, feels cheap.

Re: looking for feedback about a laptop

The 4500MHD is fine if you don't plan on playing 3d Games, but it's always a nice option to have available, "just in case".

You are right though, if you want to get an 18" w/ great specs, you're going to be paying around $1k.

Re: looking for feedback about a laptop

Honestly, they sound fine to me. I don't turn up my volume all the way, but I threw in Watchman on Blu-Ray and it looked and sounded great.

The Dell I used to have sounded bad high, low, through speakers, through headphones....it was awful.

1k plus and no Blu-Ray is ridiculous.

Re: looking for feedback about a laptop

best deal imo, was the core i5 gateway for $500 from BB a few weeks back. but that deal is long gone now.

do you really need a core i7 for just basic usage?

you can get the core i5 Acer for $600 with two year warranty.

Re: looking for feedback about a laptop

Only if you plan on gaming (Half-Life 2 and above) is it a "to avoid" card. From the sounds of it, you don't plan on gaming.

Disagree. 1k plus with killer specs and no blu is more important to me than blu with lesser specs. Though I personally would have no use for blu-ray on an 18" laptop (way too big for travel).
