There are two $10MIR also.

The best deal @dell I could find for $500 shipped/tax is:

Studio Desktop Mini-Tower
Intel Q8300
G45 (X4500HD)
3 GB DDR2 (800)
500GB 7.2k HDD
Win7

Hardware wise the build is faster mostly because of the more, faster RAM and faster GPU. The CPUS are about equal. The AMD will also be AM3 socket, as opposed to the near obsolete Intel 775.

My major reservation is the OS. I have copies of Vista and XP. Win7 would be nice but over $100 would take a big chunk from my home build budget. I probably going to switch the HDD to either the 500 Caviar Blue or Barracuda 7200.12.

Any suggestions?

Re: Rate my budget box build

The Q8300 is actually quite a bit better than the 620. It may not be entirely noticeable in daily apps, but it is isn't an insubstantial difference.

That aside, that is a quality setup, I built a similar one not too long ago. I just wish RAM would go back down in price, $98 for 4gb is ridiculous. Also, I'd go with the Caviar Black for my boot drive.

Hot desktop deal finder here:

For $500, I think you can probably get a slightly better spec'd machine from Dell than the one you found.

Thanks. I didn't see many benchmarks for the Q8300, but found quite a few that put the 620 between the Q8200 and Q8400. Although it seems the Q's do significantly better on some tests. But, like you said, either will do fine for daily apps.

I switched the drive to a Seagate 7200.12. The Black was $15 more and the .12 has a free HDD dock bundled.

I see that bing offers 2% cash back for newegg, does anyone know if I can just go thru bing and dump my egg wishlist to the cart, or will it screw up the cash back?

Thanks for the link, stevevt. FYI, the system I spec'd was $460 before tax + s/h. (and included the $11 Logitech wireless desktop upgrade).

You would think at this price point I could configure a similar AMD based Dell, but the way they have specific deals and discounts and upgrade prices, I just couldn't do it. The Dell site is a bit of a mess to work with too.

No prob. Dell.com is definitely a mess. It doesn't help that they have a ton of configurations and prices based on "email only" deals that get floated around. Anyone just going to dell.com and configuring is going to lose out 90% of the time.

Very thorough benchmark CPU list: http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php

I see there are several combo deals with the 620 and OCZ memory. I don't have a good opinion of OCZ, but I can recall exactly why. Any thoughts on them?

Re: Rate my budget box build

They Dell I configured was from a deal site, similar to the $499 Q8300 on the site you listed minus the 4GB base memory. I tried going through fat wallet (3% cashback), but I couldn't recreated it via the links they have to dell.com.

For what it's worth*, I just received a Dell Outlet coupon good for 15% off:
Q1GJLHC9L1GL3Z

*Not too much if they raised all their outlet prices.

i don't think quite a bit better is entirely accurate. better? yes, but it's not like crazy difference or anything.

It's only a 12% improvement but that is pretty noteable imho. Sure it isn't an 800 vs 1300 score but for a similarly priced machine, it's more than worth mentioning.
