Laptop startup problems. Hardware or Software?

My son has a 3-4 year old HP that has been acting up and battery is worthless. For Christmas we got him a netbook for school and he loves it.

I was trying to "salvage" his old HP to use as an extra/backup laptop. I've deleted a bunch of stuff and ran a couple of spyware programs.

All seems pretty good except one thing. The unit will, pretty regularly not boot up. The power comes on but nothing comes up and the light on the hard drive doesn't blink. The solution is to unplug the power, wait a few seconds, replug in and then turn on the power. It always comes up then.

Does this sound like a hardware or software issue? I'm thinking software since it eventually does boot.

Any suggestions off hand? He is running XP. I wouldn't mind doing a full clean install once I have him get what he wants off of it. Course I don't have an XP disc...

Sounds like a hardware issue, loose connection inside perhaps.

Your operating system could not possibly cause this.

You have not done enough troubleshooting to call anything (hardware or software) definite yet.

remove everything that is "removable" from the laptop

cd/dvd drive
hard drive
memory
wifi card or any internal add on cards
any pcmcia card
any usb devices
anything else that comes off fairly simply

This is just a simple loose connection check, now put it all back together.

See if you still have the problem.

I would also run some real diags on the hard drive and see if that tells you anything definite.

seems to be a hardware related issue. as the poster above said run some diags on the hard drive and see if anything comes up.

If the battery is worthless at this point then I would be willing to bet that your power cord (or connection) is not 100% okay, or else you are not taking the time to seat it well when you plug it in.

I agree, my old HP laptop gets hinky occasionally and it's the power cord not making a proper connection. Needs a little jiggling to fix. Doesn't happen as much as yours but I use it exclusively with the cord - the battery stinks.
