Re: The one and only ANDROID thread....

So I'm starting to get bummed about my android phone. One of the main reasons I ditched my iphone was the fingerprint sensor worked only 50% of the time. (even if I would constantly relearn my fingers to it). The Moto G5 worked perfectly when I got it, and actually unlocked faster than the iphone did.

Now, only a couple months later, the sensor is starting to fail already. And when it fails, trying again won't work, it just plain refuses to recognize my finger at all until I manually unlock it.

WTF? Do I just have bad luck? Or maybe janked up fingers? Is this technology really so fragile? Do I have to keep having android re-learning my fingers? Does anyone else have this kind of problem?

Re: The one and only ANDROID thread....

No major issues with my Pixel XL, but then again my old iPhone 6 works fine too. Something someone on here suggested for me with regards to the iPhone a year or two back was to set up multiple fingerprints using the same finger to try and capture more patterns.

Re: The one and only ANDROID thread....

They finally officially announced the Galaxy 8 Active today. Coming out on Friday. $850 retail! Hopefully I can find some trade in deals or something and get rid of my Galaxy 6 Active this weekend.

Re: The one and only ANDROID thread....

Anyone have problems syncing photos to windows 10? I know there are new photos on my phone since the last time I synced, but windows just plain isn't finding them. I have the phone in photo mode (the usb plugin thing). This happens to me a lot lately.

The photos are all getting backed up to google drive, so at least that is working. Sometimes in order to get the damn photos on my PC I have to put the USB cable in file mode, and just drag and drop them myself.

Just got a S8 a few days ago and decided to try the fingerprint thing. But I also opted for the PIN as well (just in case the print didn't work).

The S8 takes multiple scans of the preferred finger, but you can also add more fingers. However odd your fingers may be, it won't matter as it reads the prints, stores the scans, then compares them to future input of the same finger. Only thing I can think of is the sensor might not be that great in re-reading the scan.

Here's the catch I think to a successful scan for future security recognition:

Press straight down on the sensor, then when the phone does more scans, angle your finger from one side to another, so that more areas of your print are scanned, and this will translate into a better, more successful recognition.

Because if you only scan your flat finger print, the sides will not be recognized.

I don't know if your phone allows multiple scans or fingers, but the S8 seems to do a pretty good job. I barely have to touch it on the sensor and it recognizes it. I tried my other fingers just to see what would happen and it wouldn't recognize them. Kinda cool.

Love the S8, btw. I was using my S4 mini as long as I could, but the battery life would last maybe 1 hour, bought replacements and it didn't help much, and applications were crawling.

Now that I read about the S8 Active being released...it's actually what I REALLY want/need as I would like something a little more tough. But, I can wait. I got a Defender case which seems to protect it fairly well. Otterbox apparently does not have protective screens included with the Defender series anymore, and now they offer the Alpha glass as an "option" for another $45. WTF.

Fingerprint scanning tech is rather reliable, but it really depends on the type of sensor used to capture/read the print.

Swtich to an S8.

Years in, I've never had a single problem with fingerprint reading on my Galaxy S6.

Re: The one and only ANDROID thread....

Android O releasing on August 21st.

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2017...ing-august-21/

Quote:
Google has revealed the launch date for the final version of Android O: August 21. Google will be livestreaming an unveiling event live from New York City at 2:40pm ET to coincide with the solar eclipse. There's a new teaser site up at Android.com/eclipse, which counts down the time until the event. "Android O is touching down to Earth with the total solar eclipse," the site promises, "bringing some super (sweet) new powers!"

Android O (which we know will be version 8.0) is currently on its fourth developer preview, having originally launched in March. At the event we're expecting Google to unveil the traditional snack-themed codename for the OS, finally revealing what the "O" in "Android O" stands for. It should also start pushing out OTA updates for at least the Pixel and Pixel XL, with updates for older Google devices happening the day of the event or shortly after.

I kind of got over the rush to get an OS update thing, but looking forward to playing with it on my Pixel XL.

Re: The one and only ANDROID thread....

I sadly have to take back my recommendation of the Moto G5. The more I use this thing, the worse it gets. Unresponsiveness ... there's been a ton of times where I'll tap an icon to start an app, and the whole phone freezes for 5 seconds or so, and then finally launches the app. Same thing inside apps, click on a tab in an app and random freeze for a couple seconds. I've even had the thing just randomly reboot while I was using it a couple of times. Not to mention the random issues with the fingerprint sensor I'm having. Maybe you really do need to spend $600+ to get a good phone these days?

Maybe if you want a new model. I'm seeing the S6 for under $200 new. That phone was (and still is) fantastic.

I have had random freezes on every phone even my iPhone 7 Plus unfortunately... But they aren't very frequent. If they are then something is wrong with your phone.

Have you tried to do a fdr? Sometimes it can help.

Been there, done that, also on a cheaper model Moto phone. Back up your photos and do a factory reset/wipe, it'll bring back some of the responsiveness.

How much free space do you have left on the actual device (not microsd)?

Re: The one and only ANDROID thread....

So after my last Galaxy update (about a month or two ago), when I start typing (be it a text, a comment in facebook, whatever), it automatically puts a space in front of what I'm writing, and won't capitalize the first letter. This is really weird and annoying, as I always have to back up and fix that. What gives?

I've had my $400 ZTE Axon 7 for a year and it's held up remarkably well. There's no lag at all, even with the 9 million apps I have installed. I can't say the same for my $700+ LG V20, which seems to take forever and a day to get going sometimes when I unlock the screen, even though I've disabled power saving functions. And I've had that less than a year. For a phone with those specs, lag should never enter the equation.

For those who had the note 7, Samsung will give up to $425 trade in credit for the note 8. The s5 for example will net you $425 credit.

have you had any battery issues with your Pixel XL? Over the past month or so, the battery drains ridiculously fast. LIke I get maybe 6-7 hours on it with less than 2 hours of screen time.

I haven't noticed anything myself, but it's hard for me to tell because i've also been playing more random stupid games that do seem to drain battery.

Re: The one and only ANDROID thread....

My Pixel XL battery life is great. Light use gives me > 2 days. Even with heavy web browsing and screen on time (not gaming, though), it always lasts at least a very long day. (7 am to midnight)

You should check your battery details and see which apps are responsible for your bad battery life. Of course, if it's something like Android System or Google Services, that doesn't help much.

I did. I went through everything. There's nothing that stands out. Most apps are below 5% usage, and my screen is always the highest percentage of use. I've turned off location, done battery optimization, a hard reset, etc. Nothing works. I don't have Facebook app or any other ones that are usual suspects regarding diminished battery life.

I went into Verizon last night. An uninformed employee there told me I needed to use the support via phone (chat/phone) for Google. When I did that, the CSR from Google told me that since I bought at Verizon, I need to go through them. So after another trip today back to Verizon store, I've got a replacement ordered. Different employee was great and had it ordered in a minute. I have no idea what is going on, but it's annoying as fuck to have to recharge my phone at like 11 am after only about 5 hours off the charger.

I did that, too. Forgot to mention. That improved it slightly, but even still, it still continued to suck ass.
