Re: what kbps do u encode your mp3's at?

Okay, you must have posted that before I edited the post to add the link.

In short:

There's a very good MP3 encoder called LAME. It's a command-line tool. For me, the basic usage is:

Code:
LAME -V0 filename
where -V means to vary the bitrate according the needs of each part of the song, and 0 means to use as high a bitrate as would benefit that part of the song.

If you prefer a GUI, you might look into LameDropXPd, which supports drag-and-drop and allows you to specify the -V0 setting.

Also, if you want all your MP3's to play at the same volume then I recommend using a program called MP3Gain:

You will have noticed, by now, that most of my links go to the hydrogenaudio wiki. That's a good source of information on audio encoding.

I encode most of mine in aac format at around 192. Since almost every device plays aac these days I'm not worried about apple lock in

i usually do about 160 kbps, since most of the stuff isn't going to sound all that much better on shitty headphones anyway.

192. Anything higher than that is overkill if you're just listening on an iPod with basic headphones.

320k, as I listen to the mp3s in several different places. At some point, I might rerip the CDs to lossless.

Usually 192. My ears aren't very good at discerning audio quality

I tried putting some .aac files on a flash drive and playing them in my Sony head unit which is supposed to recognize .aac files. It didn't recognize them. Any ideas?

Re: what kbps do u encode your mp3's at?

I use vbr alt-preset-standard setting which averages around 192.
This sounds great on my car speakers and on my earphones (I have really nice Etymonics earplugs though).

Normally I use dbPowerAmp to encode although I'll revert to EAC if I have a slightly damaged CD as I think its error-correction is better. Both of these use LAME as the back-end encoding mechanism anyway.
