No sound w/ new computer...diagnose it!

So I bought a new computer from Cyberpower PC. The computer is running great, except for that pesky fact that there is no sound coming out.

It has the Gigabyte MA770T-UD3P motherboard that has onboard sound. I'm running Vista 64-bit. I've installed all the required drivers.

Weirdly, the motherboard recognizes that there are speakers attached, but no matter what I do to try to get it to work, it won't. Don't even get sound from the headphone jack in the front.

So, I've been racking my brain to try and get this fixed. I don't want to have to send the computer back but it may ultimately lead to that. Anyone have any thoughts as to why the sound is not outputting anything? I'm open for suggestions.

I'll assume you've checked that the master volume isn't muted?

This is a little beyond my comfort zone so I'll throw it out there for the technical-minded: isn't there some setting in the BIOS to turn on/off (or enable/disable) the onboard sound?

I recall doing it to a desktop of mine years ago when I added a new sound card, but I don't recall the details or the how-to.

interesting. hadn't thought about looking there. will take a look to see if that can remedy the problem.

Re: No sound w/ new computer...diagnose it!

so talked to tech support from Cyberpower. Good company. Worked with me and tried to get it working, but had no success. They are sending me a free soundcard to see if I can get that installed and working. If so, it's mine. If not, I ship everything back to them and get a new computer.

They wouldn't happen to be digital speakers and need a digital source? If so you might be able to set the output to digital in the sound settings (it seems that this isn't an option so much any more)

Re: No sound w/ new computer...diagnose it!

One fairly painless test is to try booting a linux live CD. Ubuntu has picked up the sound card on every machine I've tried it on. If you boot Ubuntu in live mode, it won't touch your HD and if the sound works there then you know it's a Windows driver/configuration thing and not a hardware problem.

Maybe your default sound device isn't set to the "speakers" output? Go to Control Panel - Sound and see what is set as default.

Re: No sound w/ new computer...diagnose it!

speakers were set to default. also, when you'd open a program like windows media player, play an mp3, the equalizer thing is showing the song in the sound panel. it's just not outputting any sound.
