What Format Do I Convert An AVI Video To ?

Hi

What format do i need to convert an AVI Video to if I want to play it on normal household DVD PLAYERS?

Because when i went to play the video in AVI format on my DVD player at home it wouldn't play at all.

IVE READ THAT YOU NEED TO CONVERT IT TO A DVD, but when i look at converting software they dont have DVD format, they have other formats like below.

EG: CONVERT VIDEO TO....

AVI > MPEG 2 ?
AVI > MPEG 4 ?

What do I convert the AUDIO to?

I am in New Zealand so I know it needs to be in PAL, BUT Im confused regarding what format to actually convert the Video & Audio to.

I just want to be able to play it on household dvd players in new zealand

i know this is probably an easy question for you, but its confusing for a beginner.
thanks for any help

cheers KiwiKev

P.S. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all.

Mpeg 4 is .mp4 which is for ipods I think. So, mpeg2 is DVD video. DVD audio usually is AC3.

I would say to try dvdflick but I don't know if it can do PAL.

Re: What Format Do I Convert An AVI Video To ?

Hey Ranger,

thats great thank you,

there is so many formats it gets very confusing.

so to play DVD on general household dvd player
convert AVI file to MPEG 2
and AUDIO is AC3

you're a genuis

i found this on MPEG4:-
" MPEG-4 has recently been adopted into a number of company products, including for example the PlayStation Portable, iPod, the Nero Digital product suite, Mac OS X v10.4, as well as HD DVD and Blu-ray discs. Like MPEG-2, it supports both progressive scan and interlaced video."

have a great christmas to both of you

Re: What Format Do I Convert An AVI Video To ?

hi ranger and Rypro525,

also found this def as well:-

Definition:

MPEG-2 is used on DVDs and in most digital video broadcasting and cable distribution systems. When used on a standard DVD, it offers good picture quality and supports widescreen.

The MPEG-2 format can be used on HD-DVD and Blu-ray discs.

DIV-X
A video codec created by DivX, Inc., which has become popular due to its ability to compress lengthy video segments into small sizes while maintaining relatively high visual quality.

DivX uses lossy MPEG-4 compression, where quality is balanced against file size for utility.

DivX has been a center of controversy because of its use in the replication and distribution of copyrighted DVDs. Many newer "DivX Certified" DVD players are able to play DivX encoded movies.

MPEG 1
MPEG-1 is a video codec used for Video CDs, and also sometimes for online video. The quality is roughly comparable to that of VHS. Almost every computer in the world can play this codec, and very few DVD players do not support it.

DVDFlick
It's free and converts .AVI to .ISO.

I'd say configure it to create an .ISO (rather than burn), because I've had "issues" with DVDFlick doing the actual burning.

When the convert is done just use Image Burn to create the disc and you're good to go...

Another impressive free program is AVStoDVD (it converts much more than AVS files), it will do PAL, but so will DVDFlick.

Re: What Format Do I Convert An AVI Video To ?

hi all,

this is getting more confusing.

for example download a movie that 700meg in avi format and go
to play it and i get a black screen that says i have to play it on some x3 player.

so i try and convert it a 700 meg video to dvd or mpeg2
and it comes out as only 4 seconds, dont ask me what happened to all the megs.
this is very confusing and still wont play?

any ideas

cheers kev

Download the MP4 from Youtube, not the FLV.

The FLV is a mono audio file, it's not even stereo, that also crushes blacks and colors in general.

Every video on Youtube also has an MP4, or 'HQ' version. You can call it on older videos by adding &fmt=18 to the end of the URL and hitting enter.

AVStoDVD is easily the best of the free programs, and better than quite a few pay programs.

Re: What Format Do I Convert An AVI Video To ?

you could always buy a divx dvd player and not have to worry about converting all your files. a few even have a usb port so you can hook up a hard drive or memory stick to them with you videos on it. much easier than converting and if you use usb you dont have to waste time burning dvds either.

Divx DVD players run about $50 at Target or costco...use it as a second if you like your primary

ConvertXtoDVD is good. A lot of home movies that I have in AVI I've formatted and made a custom DVD and all that. Works great.
