Trying to burn movie to Blu ray disc on Mac

I am using Final Cut Express HD and have my video edited, but I don't know how to get it onto a disc. I have iDVD, but I don't believe that supports HD or BD.

What is the easiest way to get my movie to disc so that it also has a title page and chapters - I don't want to just dump an avi file onto a BD.

I have iMovie 08, iDVD and Toast 8 Titanium.

Do you have a blu-ray burner attached to this Mac?

I would guess that you can also use Toast 10.

I wouldn't think so. I think you'd use the canned menus/interfaces in Toast. Does iDVD even know what HD video is? I don't think so.

Re: Trying to burn movie to Blu ray disc on Mac

There are three software solutions for putting HD video on a blu ray disc on a mac. Currently iDVD has no blu-ray functionality.

1) Toast 10 - With the BD plug-in, you can encode and burn a BD disc with rudimentary menus. The down side is that it's slooooooow. Took me about 10 hours to burn a 1 hour BD on a mac pro (albeit a three year old one). I think there was a BD plug-in for Toast 9, but I don't think it's available for 8.

2) Final Cut Studio 3 - The new version of Compressor (3.5) has an export to blu-ray function. Slightly better menus, and you can set chapters in the FCP timeline. Again, it's slooooow. Not as bad as Toast, but enough to drive you batty. The settings are pretty much automatic. You can also burn up to 20 minutes or so of HD footage onto a DVD-R that will play as a BDMV in a blu-ray player.

3) Adobe Encore - Bundled with Premiere and the uber expensive production suites. You can supposedly do pop up menus, animated menus, the works. I don't have it, so I have no idea how it performs.

There may also be some Avid based packages, but these run well into the thousand dollar plus range and have vertical learning curves, so they're not worth thinking about. Matrox sells a couple of pieces of hardware that speed up the video encoding end and can be used with all three software packages. They range from a PCI-express card for the mac pro at $500 to a series of external boxes starting at around $900.

I wasn't thrilled with the handful of BDs I made in Toast, but the ones created in Compressor look incredible. I just installed the Matrox card tonight, and the first test disc on a DVD looked great too.

Full size. Whatever you end up using to create the disc will handle all the compression.

Re: Trying to burn movie to Blu ray disc on Mac

Thanks for all the help. I ended up using Toast 10 and created my first BD. Video looked really good, so i am happy with the results.

cpgator - i'm trying to do the same thing you did: go from Express HD to Toast to Blu-ray. Is there anyway I can email you about this for a little help? would be VERY valuable to me.

if so, email me at [email protected]. you'd be helping me out in a MAJOR way.
