I just noticed I can't find my disc drives

Hello. I installed Windows 7 a few weeks ago and I am just noticing now that when I go to my computer, there are no disc drives listed but there is a floppy drive. The thing is, I have two dvd drives hooked up and no floppy drive. Can anyone help me to get windows to recognize them? When I insert a disc nothing happens. Thanks.

EDIT: Nevermind. Someone on another board saved the day.

Really? That's strange, but after I did the fix for it, I opened iTuens and it gave me some message saying I should reinstall iTunes. I didn't but it still works so I don't know.

Just curious, can you share the fix, or a link to it? I don't have the issue, but would be nice to see what the resolution was.

This happened to me and i called a dell support guy and he fixed it!!!

This is what you do...

Start the Run Command Prompt

Type in "regedit" without the parrenthesis then click ok

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

Then SYSTEM

Then CURRENT CONTROL SET

Then CONTROL

Then CLASS

Then find {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

The whole thing looks like this:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Then delete the upper and lower filters....

RESTART YOUR COMPUTER THEN THERE YA GO!!!! HOPE THIS HELPS
The only thing that sucks is every time I start iTunes I get a message about how the registry was changed and I should reinstall iTunes. Anyone know how to make that go away?

Re: I just noticed I can't find my disc drives

I had a similar issue after interrupting the boot process on my computer several times a couple weeks ago. The optical drives went away.

I did some searching and found some references about deleting the filters and that cleared it up, but some of my software, like CD Creator, wouldn't work and needed to be re-installed. I just added their entries to the filters and they worked.

Of course you kept a copy of what was in your registry before deleting those entries, didn't you?

Re: I just noticed I can't find my disc drives

It didn't happen to me but I had uninstalled the programs Windows recommended before installing Win 7 and Itunes was one of the programs.

It means I'm not really sure what you're talking about so I probably didn't do it...

Re: I just noticed I can't find my disc drives

There are many good alternatives to Itunes that aren't so bloaty or attempt to install Apple programs I do not need.

What do you recommend? I have Windows 7 and an iPod Touch, and need something to manage both the iPod and PC. I hope that the alternative leaves the files and folders alone, so I can go back to iTunes if necessary.

I've heard good things about Doubletwist but haven't tried it yet.

Re: I just noticed I can't find my disc drives

doubletwist sucks

itunes 9 is better than the earlier ones and I think they made changes to the backend because things seem faster. most of the functionality of itunes is on apple's servers. the zune software looks OK, but there is no functionality in the Zune. and it uses the same CD burning drivers as itunes which can cause problems.

Re: I just noticed I can't find my disc drives

Can I use Zune software to play music on my PC, and iTunes to sync with my iPod? Would Zune create parallel media files for itself or will it just use the iTunes files?

You can point the Zune to the same media folders that iTunes uses.

iTunes is just ugly. Just want something different.

Thanks. Just downloaded Zune software. It looks nice. I like the "wallpaper" screen.

Maybe not ugly, but boring and there isn't much customization possible.
