Re: easiest way to reformat 1tb external HD to fat32?

-Go to Run option in Windows
-Type CMD to bring up command window
-Type "format (Drive letter): /FS:FAT32" minus the "'s

Doing this will erase any data currently on the drive.

Any reason you want Fat32 rather than NTFS? Using it with a Mac?

thanks i will try that.
the dvd player can only access usb devices that are formated fat32. otherwise i would have stuck with ntfs.

Ah. I don't know what types of files you'll be playing but Fat32 can't handle a file larger than 4gig.

Can you format over 32GB as FAT32 without a 3rd party program?

As for the label, just put Drive G or something like that to identify it.

That's an option to change the drive label if you wanted it to be something other than G. Just press enter.

For a 1TB drive? Yeah, it'll take a little while.

Re: easiest way to reformat 1tb external HD to fat32?

Sorry, can't help there. I had to do the opposite with an external drive I bought (from Fat32 to NTFS) but that was a few years ago. I don't remember how long it took.

Re: easiest way to reformat 1tb external HD to fat32?

You should have added a /q to the format command string

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/d....mspx?mfr=true

-Type "format (Drive letter): /FS:FAT32 /q" minus the "'s

X - IIRC the 32gb format limit was only during XP setup, but i haven't used fat32 in so long I can't be 100% sure of my memory

No, I've tried to format a new drive on an existing OS as FAT32 but it didn't work. Had to use a separate program to do it.

This says you can do it from a DOS prompt though. I don't think I ever tried that!

Unfortunately, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 will only format a removable drive in FAT32 if it’s less than 32GB! Hmmm…that pretty much cuts out ALL modern external hard drives!

However, Windows can format a drive that is larger than 32GB in FAT32, but you have to use the DOS command prompt. However, if you have a drive that is 1TB or larger, you may still get an error saying “The volume is too big for FAT32”.

Re: easiest way to reformat 1tb external HD to fat32?

FAT32 is very, very old. It was designed back when 10GB HDs were considered huge. And even back then it wasn't considered a "modern" file system design. It was a kludgy hack to get around FAT16's 2GB limit.

All that having been said, this can work provided you keep a couple things in mind. One is that your cluster size will be huge. For storing a relatively few large files, this won't make too much of a difference, but if you store a great many small files, you'll find you have less usable disk space than you would expect.

The other thing to remember is that FAT32 is fragile. It has relatively few features to protect the integrity of the filesystem so it's very susceptible to corruption. Be very careful about shutting it off or unplugging it unexpectedly while it's in use. Also, make sure all the data you're storing on the drive is backed up elsewhere if you hope to keep it for very long.

Just hit CTRL-C and see if it lets you end the format.

Interesting. I just looked at my copy and that's all it does (along with NTFS).

There are other programs you can use.
