My old monitor crapped out recently and I
need to get something new. I have my $150
gift certificate for amazon from mci here
and I am wondering what the picks are for monitors. I am looking to spend $250-300
or so and get something in the 17-19 inch
range. I know I like toshiba, panasonic,
and sony for brands as far as my tv/theater
setup goes. I dont know who makes monitors
really-NEC, Sony, Tatung...who is good?
what models should I be looking at on amazon.
Am I going to get hosed on costs from amazon?
Should I save the $150 for dvds and get
something after looking on pricewatch.com
or compgeeks or somehwere else? I am putting
my faith in the dvdtalkers here. I want to
get something good for the amount I am going to spend. I have an all in wonder 16meg agp
card and do alot of graphics (photoshop) kind of stuff. What should I do? Any ideas?
Any links or suggestions?

since i assumed you wanted to use your amazon gift certificate here are three choices from me:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00004TS2R/105-5418153-9544735
19" viewsonic pf790 = $439.94-150=289.94 +shipping and tax

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00004TS2O/105-5418153-9544735
19" optiquest(owned by viewsonic) Q95=299.94-150= $149.94+usual

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00004TS2S/105-5418153-9544735
17" viewsonic pf775 313.84-150=163.84 + usual

I used DvdTalk's link to generate these I assume the 105-5418153-9544735 code is the dvdtalk referral code?

I like viewsonic monitors myself.
good luck in your search!

I will agree with viewsonic/optiquest, good bang for the buck.

I also like the Sony trinitrons, but they are pricey.

Go for ViewSonic, and if you think they are too expensive Optiquest is not bad (it is the economic line of ViewSonic).

Sony are good and flat but unfortunately they are expensive. Also since they use a Trinitron tube there are 2 black lines at 1/3 and 2/3 of the screen. These are wires to "hold" the monitor and many people (including me) cannot stand these lines. But if you can live with the lines, the Sony monitors have the best image.

Wow! You're the first person I ever heard of who didn't get used to the wire lines. I hated them for about 1 minute and then learned to look for them when I wanted to line things up on my monitor.
